"Removing, then adding, fly line and backing is really simple with this linewinder.
In late Fall, I totally tear down my 8 fly reels for winter lay-up. I feel to properly clean each reel, I need to remove the fly line and then the backing and to do that I use the linewinder. After the line is wrapped on the linewinder, I secure the line with 3 twisty wire ties to keep the line wound in a spool.(I get the ties at the super market vegetable deparment when I bag my fruits and vegetables). I label the rolled up spool of fly line and the spool of backing for its respective reel . I store all the spooled line in a clean dry location.
With the line removed, I clean and lubricate the reel and store it until spring. In the Spring, I put the backing spool on the linewinder, take off the twisty ties and crank the line on on the reel. Then do the same with the fly line.Really handy.
Only con, the clamp is not that strong and contiually wants to come loose. No harm, just slows the process while re-tightening. I found a way to overcome the clamp problem so this linewinder is very close to perfect."

"I purchased this line winder to help simplify cleaning of my lines after use in questionable waters. It is good at winding but the locking mechanization is plastic, this allows it to jump threads when tightened, and therefore cannot retain tension enough to un-spool a reel, this results in a nest looking wad on the winder... luckily the line is not tangled, but it cannot be removed and twist tied for storage. I had to purchase a small clamp to hold back the plastic locking device to maintain the form of the winder to keep the line organized."
