Customer Reviews for Cotton Cordell Cotton Cordell® Gay Blade

Cotton Cordell Cotton Cordell® Gay Blade

The Cotton Cordell Gay Blade's ''flathead'' design creates a tight, pulsating action that lets you feel the lure working. Fish the Gay Blade just under the surface with a fast retrieve; it's a great technique for schooling fish. Or fish the Gay Blade vertically, a technique that is very effective for enticing deep walleye, bass and even ice fishing!

Great lure

,
January 1, 2012
By Ndett
from Niagara Falls NY
Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design, Performs well, Value for money, Quality
"I live in Niagara falls and bought a few of these for winter smallies. I went out yesterday to the mouth of the niagara into lake Ontario and on the 3rd cast caught a 12lb steelhead. 10 minutes later got another one. All I was doing was jigging it along the bottom and they were killing it.Then the fog came and had to leave. Lure gets tangled with the front hook when your jigging it but just take it off and your good to go. Great action and small and heavy. Great for winter fishing and getting down deep where cranks can't go. I can't wait to get out next week and try again."

Great lure

,
June 5, 2011
By theLUCKY

Advantages: Style/Design, Performs well, Value for money, catches different species of fish
Disadvantages: Difficult to use, hooks will hang up
"It doesn't look like much, but man can this lure catch fish. All species too. I caught big bass in Mexico on and nice size pike in Maine. A truly universal lure. Pay the extra more for the gay blade than for the cheaper knock offs. The cordell model has fewer hang ups."

Unreal!

Advantages: Ease of use
Disadvantages: ummmm.....not really!
"Ok, first off let me say this. When all else fails this little guy hammers the fish. It does not matter what you are fishing for or even of yuou are fishing specific species. This Lure will catch them all. When the fishing gets tough use this one, or to throw a mix in your arsenal. I bought just one of these last christmas for a test run. It is beat up now and I will be buying several more to use! The one I have been using is the Chrome and black Blade. Have fun!"

Superior to XPS Lazer Blades

,
April 2, 2011
By Namor
from Denver, CO
Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Value for money, Quality
Disadvantages: unable to change out hooks
"If you are trying to decide between these and the Bass Pro Shops XPS Lazer Blades then do yourself a favor and save yourself some time, get the Cordell blades. Besides the name and 50 cent price difference, these Cotton Cordell blades are far superior in quality than the lazer blades. Both the cordell and lazer blade catch fish but the biggest difference between these two is that the cordell blade doesn't get as frequently hung up as the lazer blade. Trust me, the lazer blade gets hung up frequently like 1 in 3 casts you will have to free the lazer from itself...the cordell blade is like 1 in 10 casts. I've tested both to get these ratios...
Pros vs the XPS Lazer Blade:
-Doesn't get hung up as easily or as frequently as
-Casts further (1/4 oz cordell blade vs 1/4 oz lazer blade)
-Colors aren't as easily chipped
Cons vs the XPS Lazer Blade:
-Not as many colors to choose from but you can't go wrong with the chrome/blue in any water condition

school bell has rung

"For schooling fish these little guys are the bomb diggity . Largemouth, sandbass, whitebass hybrids, strippers, they will all just fight each other over it when schooling. I have caught 3 whitebass at a time on this lure before many times. If you use for strippers or hybrids you'll want to use heavier gauge hooks but not bigger. They also work fishing for largemouth on lakes that are high pressured . Fish low and tight to bottom around old bridge pilones .Watch out because this can be a really deadly pattern capable of a tournament win . You do have to be careful not burry hooks in the cover because they don't deflect like crankbaits . If you set the hooks like a crankbait you'll usually not bury it so bad that you can get it back and the trebles need that type of hookset anyway .It's just something they never really see. Great at verticle jigging too. This lure is very versatile . Good Luck !"

Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design, Performs well, Value for money
Disadvantages: lack of instruction on rigging
"Name is right on, I get happy every time I use this blade bait. Have caught white bass, walleye, small mouth, crappie, and even a couple of channel cats. Last time out, hauled in a 17 3/4" 3.5# smallie. Its not a bait most people use so the fish aren't used to the presentation. Get one an tie it on. Only downside is no explanation of which holes to use for the presentation. I only retrieve, no jigging, and use the hole towards the tail end. Must use a snap, don't tie directly to your line."

"Very heavy, sinks like a rock. Plenty of flash but also loves hooking weeds. Didn't catch a thing in 1/2 hour except for weeds. Dulce anyone?
Not overly impressed with it but will give it a second chance.
Will try fishing it vertically next time."

"I use this little lure for White Bass, Hybrids and Stripers in the spring of the year during the spawn. It slays them. I was suprised to find that it comes with its own swivel attachment to tie the line on. This is a must to save the line at the tie off point. Way to go. Ive never bought any like this. Awesome Thanks"

Whte Bass Love 'em

,
February 6, 2009
By bassrider
from Humble, TX
"I use the 3/8 oz in places where I use a 1/4 oz rattle trap. When fish are really active they both catch about the same. When they are not the advantage to this product is that it has really good action on the fall. When whites are hanging in the deeper pockets and not really chasing bait, you can stop realing this bait in and let it fall to the bottom on a semi-tight line. A lot of them will bite while it is falling. A lot of times they bite when you pick it up. The dual front hook doesn't get hung up as much as a treble when you drag it across cover."

Expected More

"I bought a couple of these and I was not happy with them. The Bass Pro xps blade bait is WAAAAYYYYY better then these blades. The bass pro xps have way better action in the water then the gayblade, the back hook has a habit of getting hung up on the line which I dont have this problem with the BassPro xps blades. Maybe I expected more out of it and I was let down. Buy the XPS blades!! You wont be dissapointed"

Alternative Bait

"This is a good bait to use when bait fish are being chased. I threw it over a grass bed and hooked up with several nice fish. Use this bait instead of a spinnerbait or lipless crankbait."

A Must Have

November 20, 2007
By retiredandlovingit

"This is a very effective little bait, especially where shad are present. The bass jump all over this thing. It has alot of flash and a tight wiggle, and it looks very convincing in the water. Consider throwing this lure instead of a 1/4 oz. lipless crank. It's much easier to cast, especially during windy conditions."

Great Buy

,
June 14, 2007
By BassEliminator
"I bought this lure a while back and i had it in my tacklebox and never thought to use it, it was about 7:00 when I remembered i had it in there. I got it out when I saw some shad and the bass chasing them. I had tied Chrome Black on and on the 1st cast I got hooked up on a fish. When we weighed it in he ended up being a 41/2 pounder. I have recommened this to my friends. Great Buy."
