Started good, ended bad.

,
May 15, 2012
By Surfjdog
from Ocean City, MD
Disadvantages: Durability
"This reel felt good, looked good, and I thought it would do that job. However after one season of surf fishing the gears began to slow up. I take care of my stuff so it wasn't due to lack of TLC.
After 1 season the handle stem literally broke in half. I can't possible explain how metal breaks in half like that but it did."

Lasted only a few weeks

,
February 25, 2012
By Czar
Disadvantages: Durability
"After no more than 25 days of use, this EMCAST 5500 failed mechanically. It sounds as if there were stripped gears and the spool will not raise and fall as it is reeled.
I purchased a couple of these reels from Bass Pro Shops and this is first product from Bass that I have ever had fail so miserably so quickly."

Big, but weak!

,
February 22, 2011
By pompanojoe
from Gulf Coast
Advantages: Style/Design
Disadvantages: Performance, flex under load
"This is the biggest 5000 series reel I've ever seen. Don't let the numbers fool you, and be sure and look at the weight. Great look and tremendous retrieve, but the reel actually torques on the foot. Reminded me why I am a fan of metal reels. I don't know what would happen if you hooked a nice size fish, I didn't keep mine long enough to see. I loved the Emcast surf rod, but this reel is a joke. I've had stiffer reels for less $."

Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design, Performs well, Value for money, Quality, great color
Disadvantages: large reel
"I bought this reel to put with a 7ft ugly stick med/hev rod for lg catfish in KY. Took it to Myrtle Beach and caught a 5ft shovelnose shark at night. Not a problem, took 15 min and he was on shore with everybody watching. 15 lb test no leader. Good times. Great reel!"

"I fish on a river from the shore and need to cast out there pretty far to hit the deeper water so I combined the 4500 size reel with the 12' Daiwa Sealine Rod, 10 lb. Trilene mono line, and can consistently cast 3-5 oz. sinkers 120+ yards (measured) with this combo.
Great reel."

Execelent Reel for the Price

"I have four of these reels match to Daiwa Sealine 10ft rods. These reels perform flawlessly. The drag is smooth and consistant and they cast like bullet. We use them for cats and carp(don't knock it I live in Kansas there's not that much to do) and they have not had any problems at all. These are great reels for the budget minded fisherman and can't find any reason not to recommend these to anyone."

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money, i can cast over a 100 yards with this reel.
"I put the EMcast 5000 reel thru the works for a year, bank snaggen 50lb+ psddlefish and catchen blue and flathead catfish over 50lbs. It held up never gave a hint of giving, drag never locked up even when put to long screamen runs with 25 lb line. Lots of cranken power for a spinning reel. I love the way the spool is set up no under spool looping ever. Reel has good smooth balance and works wonders on a 10ft surf rod. It casts well and is just a good tough all aroung spinnen reel for large fish. I would recomend this reel to anyone who fishes for large catfish, stripers, or who enjoy the sport of bank snaggen paddlefish."

Excellent Reel

"I love this reel! I bought the Emcast Sport 6000 to take on a trip to Panama City Beach, and I couldn't have asked for a better piece of equipment for the price. The action is smooth, the anti-reverse works flawlessly, and the large-handled crank makes pulling in heavy fish much easier. My first day on the gulf, I managed to hook two catfish--each about 8-9 lbs. Once out of the water, I made a few turns to tighten the drag and easily brought them up 50 or 60 feet to the pier--no slipping, skipping, or grinding gears at all!
I caught many other fish throughout the trip, and despite the tough fighting nature of ocean fish, this reel performed flawlessly--it almost felt unfair how easy it was to bring in big fish.
I have the model 6000 mounted on a 9ft Shakespeare Ugly Stik Big Water (medium-heavy action). I filled one of the spools with 20lb Trilene Maxx monofilament, and the other with Bass Pro 30lb braided line. I did manage to drop the reel in the sand a couple times, but it seemed completely unaffected. All of the joints and moving parts are very well sealed. Also, the push-button collapsable handle is very convenient for storing the reel.
I'm sure there are many superior saltwater spinning reels out there, but for 65$, I think this one is pretty hard to beat. I would 100% recommend this to anyone looking for a quality reel on a budget."

Great Reel

"Had a trip to Cabo last month and bought this reel (5500) because of the price and reviews. I didn't realize how great it was going to be. My father and brother in law both had Quantum Cabo reels which broke...both of them! My reel held up great and I worked it hard. Caught Jacks, sierras, and roosters off the beach."
