"I have fished ugly all my life. My friends have ribbed me about it in the past, but when I stand toe to toe with their L.L. Bean and Lamiglass, GLoomis gear they cant convince me that they feel or fight any better. I catch, more often than not, as many or more steelhead on the same waters using the same gear. I fish the Salmon River and the South Fork of the Clearwater. We catch fish in the 7 to 22 lb range and these rods catch all with ease. I have never had a problem nor a compaint with the feel or durability of any of Ugly Stiks rods. This one in particular is an easy 5 stars for any one looking for the all around rod for steelhead or salmon. Good luck and maybe I'll see you on the water."

Overall a quality rod

"I am used to a 6' Bass rod with my baitcasting reels. This 8’6” Heavy action rod took a little getting used to. With some finesse, I can cast 1/4 oz. lures respectably. I can get more distance than I need casting 3/8 oz. and 1/2 oz. lures. I found the Heavy action to be quite sturdy, very stiff, lots of backbone. I found that with the 1/4 oz. lures only the tip section of the rod flexes during the cast, but that seems to get the job done. I have not yet put a good bend in the rod. A few points: (1) The nut used to attach the handle to the reel appears to be soft plastic. The nut flexed and became out of round when I attached the reel. (2) With the balance of the rod, I need to put my non-reeling hand on the front grip of the handle. I would like to see the front grip of the handle be longer. (3) Shakespeare told me that braided line is not recommended with the guides on this rod. Having said all of this, I like the rod. In my opinion the product is of good quality with good craftsmanship and good function."

Good for inshore use

"I purchased heavy model for inshore fishing. This rod is so frexible, indestructible and sensitive like other ugly stiks. Actually I didn't expect its ferule for the preice. In reality, the ferule is very good. When I oscillate the rod intensively to find flaw, I cannnot find any rattle in it. I combine this rod with abu 5500, 14Lb line and 1/2oz sinker when I need distance. This rod also works as a lite surf rod. I'll add some other models."
