Customer Reviews for Heddon Heddon® Zara® Spook®

Heddon Heddon® Zara® Spook®

Introduced in 1939, the Zara Spook's legendary ''walk-the-dog'' top water action has been written about more than any other fishing lure. To fish a Heddon Zara Spook, use a rhythmic, slack-line retrieve that makes the Zara Spook walk from left to right, back and forth. The Zara Spook's plump profile is a tantalizing target for bass and pike. Hooks: two #1/0.

Great lure

Advantages: Style/Design, Performs well, Quality
"I've used this lure for years. It takes a little practice to get the "walking" action right but it is well worth it. I've caught many, many bass on this lure. The clear works particularly good on bright days."

Best hard top water bait

,
January 31, 2012
By livetobowhunt

Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design, Performs well, Value for money
"This is the best hard top water bait. I was down in florida around march last year and a massive cold front came through.( High 45 15-20 mph winds) and the bass just shut down. Brought one of these bad boys out and my luck changed in a hurry. Top water expands yours strike zone 10 fold. It also keeps your bait in the strike zone longer. I was doing 5 min between cast in FL and it made the diff. When cranks were too fast and soft plastics werent doing it this bait came through. Its not just the action either. I bought another lure that you walk the dog with in FL becasue my zara was gettin beat down and all they had was a different name brand. Didnt get but 3 bites. Just delay the hook set a couple of seconds and replace trebbles with better ones and you will light them up."

BIG Bass love the Spook

Advantages: Style/Design, Performs well, Quality
"When the timing is right, Zara Spooks are AWESOME. I watched my Uncle catch plenty of big Bass on this lure before I finally gave in and bought a few and learned how to "walk the dog". I caught my biggest Bass to date on a Zara Spook (Natural Perch color). Simply put, this is a BIG fish bait. Experiement with different speeds of retrieve until you know exactly what the big boys want!"

best lures

,
August 12, 2011
By JET4571
Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Value for money
Disadvantages: catches fish greater than your line can handle.
"I have used these and the smaller version for years and they always come through in catching fish. I have even caught fish that were smaller than the lure itself. The walk the dog technigue is easy to learn and is versatile on how fast or slow you do it. I have caught more fish on these than all poppers combined!
A top rated lure!"

Classic

By loves2bassfish

Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design, Performs well
Disadvantages: dull hooks
"I love fishing with classic lures and the Spook is one of the best of them. When the topwater bite is on this is my go to lure. As for color it's hard to go wrong with Baby Bass, Bullfrog, Blue shore minnow, Or Chrome black Shad. Only downside is the hooks are very very dull out of the box so replace them or get the file ready."

"You can't go wrong with a Zara Spook. For some reason, it entices bass of all sizes to attack. I'll never be found on a lake without 3 or 4 of them But I really wish Bass Pro would re-introduce the Dying Flutter... that was Heddon's best lure ever."

"This is an awesome, easy to use topwater bait. Once you get the hang of the simple retrive, you'll start crankin in the big bass! Casts a mile and has great action, The natural frog color is my personal favorite and has always been a great producer. Don't rush your retreive and you'll be sure to catch a hawg!"

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Value for money
Disadvantages: heddon needs a weedless version
"This is probably the best lure to learn how to walk the dog. And it draws bass from far away. First 5 minutes of using this lure I hooked into a 4lb bass, and he nailed it!!! Just make sure you have a light rod so that your wrist doesn't hurt after 45 minutes of use."

"As with any fisherman, I absolutely love catching topwater bass. This lure has landed me more good sized bass than any other topwater baits. It takes some practice to master the walk-the-dog technique, but it is highly effective when done correctly, and will land you some aggressive bass."

Old Classic

"One of my first crank baits was a Zara Spook in a frog pattern. When I lost it, I replaced it immediately. That is how great it is at catching Bass. It took no time at all to learn how to "Walk the Dog." It catches Bass and is a great old classic - a "must have" bait."

The classic 'walk the dog' topwater bait!

Advantages: Style/Design, Performs well, Value for money, Quality
Disadvantages: takes some practice to make it walk!
"There are two basic top water presentations, other than frogs. The chugger/popper and the cigar style ‘walk the dog’ bait.
The Zara Spook is the classic cigar-style, walk the dog, top water lure. It has a very sturdy paint job, quality components and high-quality hooks. It is probably best suited for monofilament line in the 10-14 LB range. It is paired well with a nice medium speed reel on a 6 & ½ or 7 foot rod with medium action and a fast or extra fast tip. The medium action and fast tip help to keep from jerking the bait out of the fish’s mouth. Use a sweeping lift as the hook-set, no TV style hook-set needed.
We have experienced the best results with the silver/ shad colors. It can be tied directly on to the wire loop or an ‘O’ ring may be used.
TIP: To get the classic “walk the dog” action, try fishing the lure with the rod tip down. Pull the bait along with pops of the rod, pulling it down from horizontal to the water. Use longer strokes when the bait is away from you, and shorten the strokes as the bait gets closer. It takes some practice, but after a few minutes you’ll be able to walk the bait left-to-right just like Bill Dance.
Top water bass fishing is one of the most exciting and sought after techniques. Many anglers become frustrated as the top water bite can be elusive. There are some basics principles to keep in mind that should increase your chances of getting bit on a top-water bait.
When to use: Use the bait when fish are active and feeding. Pre-spawn, fall and the dog days of summer can all offer a great window for top water fishing. During the pre-spawn and in the fall, fish are feeding in anticipation of the upcoming changes. In the summer the fish have their metabolism peeked and will feed several times per day.
TIP: In the dog days of summer, keep an eye on the moon phase! Fish will feed at night using moon light when the water gets bath warm. During the waxing/waning crescent and new moon, there is very little light and this can force the bass to feed at dawn/dusk. Try Spook during these conditions for some exciting low light top water action."
