Just save your money a little longer,October 6, 2009
By Adam17from GA
Disadvantages: Durability, Performance
"I believe I posted a review on this reel before and was quick to jump the gun when i did so. Like the guy below me my reels would make the worst sound one that would send a chill up your spine when you cast it sometimes. The reel is very smooth when you reel it it was just how it would mess up sometimes casting that I hated. And I bought two that did it so it wasn't just a coincidence. Don't let this scare you away from Daiwa though I upgraded to two 50th anniversary zillions and a 4.9 zillion for cranking. Once i picked up these reels i realized how much a little more money could get you. If you want a good reel just save a little more and buy a zillion those things are rock solid."

Will be returning,August 24, 2009
By sploosh56from Western Basin Lake Erie
"When I first purchased this reel during the month of May I could not hav been happier. I had it paired up with a G-Loomis 7' MH GL3 and it was awesome! But, as the many others have learned, this reel does not last long. Often when I cast now it was atempt to engage and stop the spool completely. Also makes a terrible sound when I cast. This morning was th final straw however. I hooked a good sized bass and the reel completely disengaged and went into freespool. I'm sure you can finish the story yourself.
I've always loved Diawa for their baitcasters, but now I'm begining to question them. I'll be looking at exchanging this for a shimano more than likely since their spinning reels are fantastic"

For those with squeaky reels...please read,August 22, 2009
By dgeesamanfrom Harrisburg, PA
Advantages: Ease of use, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money
"I just bought this reel tonight at the store and I'm headed out for a week of bass fishing in Canada. Then I read the review after I got home (Yeah, I know) and got a bit nervous about whether it might clunk out on day one with no replacement in sight.
Here's my contribution: when removing/replacing the spool, the manual says to unscrew the thumbscrew, rotate the endplate, and slide off the endplate. When you put it back in however, you should also loosen the spool tensioner (the shiny knurled knob) or else the tensioner will fight you a little bit putting the endplate back on. If you force the endplate it will carve fine plastic shavings off of the endplate boss. I did not know this the first time I spooled up, and on further inspection I found that there were a couple of small plastic shavings loose under the endplate. While I can't confirm this is what happened to others, the shavings would definitely affect casting and make noise. Definitely have a look in yours.
Having had a look at the insides, I am satisfied with the internal construction at this price point. Brass gearing, shielded ball bearings, and a metal center housing make for a proper main drive. The drive to the worm gear is plastic gearing but that doesn't concern me as there is not much load on these parts. The factory grease job was so-so, I might get bored one day, get out the rubbing alcohol and Hot Sauce and relubricate everything.
I'm looking forward to using this and I'll update the review after a week of use."

hot an everyday reel,August 20, 2009
By buster88from granby MA
Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design Disadvantages: Durability, Performance, materials
"i got this reel in december and have used it 3-4 times a week. it was fairly solid at first but after the first lubing it started to go down hill. i think i did a good job at puting it together but the clutch would start to slip after the 2-3 time. i managed to fix the problems a few times, but it all of a sudden just died on me and always slips now. i am looking at the rick clunn reel but the pro qualifier has a lube port so that will eliminate the problem of puting the reel together and running into problems if something goes wrong. i would recomend this reel to casual sportsmen, but if you fish an extreame amount like me then look into a reel with more enderance and durability. i ran into alot of the same problems as other people and knew what i was doing. granted i really put this reel through alot of stuff, i feel it could have been made with stronger parts. and if you do choose this reel, be careful not to breack the tab on the side mount cover. not the tightest reel for my taste."

Good out of the gate,July 26, 2009
By OldSchool
Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design Disadvantages: Durability, Performance
"Great reel out of the box, smooth, high expectations for 11 bearing reel and it is very fast retrieve. Purchased primarily to fish buzzbait at night, fit the bill ok at first. Purchased the reel several months ago, caught several nice fish since but now consistanly starting to get the old bird nest after several months of use. I have relaced line twice now as it will load on one side after awhile. Thought it would last a little longer for the money."

Bad purchase,July 14, 2009
By Lrgmth2
Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design Disadvantages: Durability, Performance
"I really liked the real in the begining. It was smooth and reliable. It started to squeak really bad the last couple of times out and i tried to oil and grease it but that doesn't help. I am returning the reel to the store to see my options. The reel is only 2 months old and i will not be buying another one."

Good Overall Reel,June 13, 2009
By Egregiousfrom New Orleans, Louisiana
Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money Disadvantages: Performance
"This Daiwa reel is really a great reel with only one drawback. That drawback is the agitating noise during casting and retrieving caused by the plastic line guide. I have tried to quiet the noise with grease and oil but this is not the solution."

What's up,June 12, 2009
By cobra6from central texas
Advantages: Style/Design Disadvantages: simply did not work as designed to work
"I ordered and received the reel. Everything looked absolutely great. Took it out of the box and tried to put line on it but the reel spool never engaged and line could not be loaded. The Star Drag seemed frozen in place. The line carrier engaged and worked but the spool was free wheeling and never engaged by the handle. I have returned the reel per instructions."

You could probally find a better real,June 3, 2009
By benscfrom South Carolina
Advantages: Ease of use, speed sweat sweat speed Disadvantages: Durability, Performance, not a tightly constructed real
"I recently purchased a TD Pro a few weeks ago. I've always liked Daiwa's reals but in the past few years they're prices are going up and the quality is steadily going down. I noticed immedietly that even with 11+ ball bearings the real wasn't as smooth as I I had expected. It also has a little "slop" in the handle, this I think is causing noise on the retreive. I do like the reals speed and low profile. With 7.1:1 retreive you can get a buzzbait on top with 2 turns of the handle. Paying 10 more bucks for a Tierra may be a better bet, or switching to a Garcia Revo."

Daiwa Disapointment,May 31, 2009
By delcfrom Lake Charles, LA
Advantages: Style/Design, Value for money Disadvantages: Performance, squeak on retrive
"I bought this reel two months ago and have used it only a few times. From the day I got the reel it would squeak on retriving. I disassembled the reel and lubricated the drive shaft and bearings. This did not eliminate the squeak. I brought it back to Bass Pro and they allowed me to trade it for another reel. I traded for the Pro Lite Finesse. For the same price the Pro Lite is just as smooth casting, is lighter, and does not squeak."

nive looking but noisey,May 26, 2009
By DiamondDavefrom Illinois
"First time out with the reel I noticed it was pretty noisey when casting. Does cast nice but just a little loud for me. After about 15 minutes of casting it started to sqeak while realing, real annoying. I'm taking it back and getting another Quantum KVD bait caster instead, I love that real."

My son and a 15 3/4" LM Bass. I cast and he reels.
Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money, matching rod too
"My very lovely and understanding wife purchased a 20' tourny Bass Boat for me and when she gave me an additional allowance to fill my new boat with all the fishing and safety equipment I needed, I instantly thought...DIAWA! Curious with the TD Pro at first so I purchased it with a matching 7' TD Pro casting rod. Early April 2009 (Cabin Fever) I had to get out and test the new TD Pro set, and the boat. Went out on Lake Michigan casting for Browns in 10'-15' of water. 2 hrs and 13 5-7 pound Browns later (kept two), I was hooked on the Diawa TD Pro. The power, the performance, the ability to cast 1/4 oz spoons, and of course the swept handle were all just PERFECT. I was so pleased with how the TD Pro handled that I now have a total of 4 matching DIAWA TD PRO rod/reel set ups, 2 casting and 2 spinning, along with 6 other Diawa rods/reels in the rod locker. Quantum is still a good brand, but I'm glad I made the switch to Diawa 3 years ago because now I am 'complete'. My partner has since purchased 2 Diawa TD Pro sets as well. Did I mention that the TD Pro is just SIMPLY SUPERB when it comes to Bass fishing? It truely is. THANKS DIAWA."

Vs. Pinnacle Vision XLT.,May 13, 2009
By FishesOnfrom Mahopac, NY
Advantages: color Disadvantages: heavy
"Pinnacle has 13 ballbearings, Smoother finish, smaller overall size (a bit larger than Finese Pro Lite reel), lighter, casting distances are the same, costs $40 less. Overall the quality of the my Pinnacle is better, TD is a fine reel but for the extra $40 and weight...I put my money with the Pinnacle."

Great Reel,May 13, 2009
By Artillerymanfrom Arlington, VA
Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money
"This was my first Daiwa baitcasting reel purchase (I was a die-hard Quantum only kind of guy) and I have been extremely pleased with this reel. This reel will toss even the lightest crankbait, worm, or jig farther and on target better than anything I've ever used - even with Trilene® 100% Fluorocarbon Professional Grade™ Fishing Line. It is very easy to "dial-in" the braking system for whatever conditions and lure choice you are fishing. I would highly recommend this reel to anyone."

"This reel will fly. match it with a G Loomis rod and some trilene fluorocarbon and your set to fish. The reel has such as smooth retrieval that you do have to watch out while fishing shaky heads and worms in order to keep it slow. Very smooth real though and a great buy."

Smooth Casts and Retrieves,April 19, 2009
By Sunnydayfrom Michigan
Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money
"Spooled with 10lb mono on a 7 foot rod and fully braked this reel tosses light cranks effortlessly and farther than my other casters. Smooth retrieves. Good feel. I find myself picking it up over and over. Throwing traps into the wind has not been messy. They advertised "Speed Tuned" on the reel face. I think they meant it."

1 year later,March 3, 2009
By zuma210from central oklahoma
"my wife bought me this real last year for a birthday present initially I was pleased with the looks and feel. it is very slick looking reel and feels nice in the palm. the operation of the reel is fairly smooth and has been flawless in performance over a year of fishing. I just bought my 2nd one this week based on the performance of the other reel. this has been a very good performer for the price range. it is not a $400 dollar reel and if you are looking for that level of performance you will not be satisfied however if you are looking for a reel that looks good and performs well for $100 range it is hard to beat."

Very Happy,January 20, 2009
By Chesfrom Jackson, MI
"I bought one of these reels a few months ago and have been very happy with them. I usually fish with Zillions but decided to try this reel since it was on sale. I was a little concerned about some of the bad reviews but a couple of the detailed reviews were very good. Out of the box it is a very striking reel...I'd have to say 10/10 for looks, even sexier than the zillion. The reel was very smooth and quiet and had a high quality feel about it. It doesn't feel much different than holding and reeling with my zillions... not quite as light but palms fantastic and has the same long handle with swept design which is nice. Casting is smooth with great distance. Overall I'm very happy with it and have since bought 2 more and those have been just as good. I doubt I'll buy any more Zillions ( I have 4)...for 99 bucks on sale you can't beat this reel."
