"the line installed is junk so swap it off quick. otherwise its just a cheap poorly made combo. i bought it for some unknown reason. if you want a cheap combo get one of the basspro combos for 10 or 20 bucks more."

"I bought the spinnning combo because i heard that Shakespeares were supposed to be durable. After one year of use I have to disagree. The guides bend easily and a part of the handle became missing. Also, whenever you reel in fast the line gets caught around the hook keeper. I would only recommend this product if you are a first time fisherman and are not sure if you are going to keep at it. If you are a 3-5 day a week fisherman then I do not recommend this product."

"I have other Ugly stick fishing rods. It's what I wanted. I purchased 3 sets for my grandchildren and have used them already. Nice. Using in salt water for snapper blue fish. Used bobber that came in package. Grandchildren were able to cast with a little instruction. All the fishing items, hooks, weights, lures, etc. I transfered to a plano box for each child. They enjoyed all the fishing items that came with the rod & reel. Ugly stick rods are very durable and the Shakespeare reel looks like it will give good use. The price was right, shipping perfect, arrived in good shape. Packaging color and arrangement was exciting for the children to see and open."

"Let me start with the positives; (1)the line installed is decent enough for small fish (2) good if you catch anything under 2 lbs (3) good enough for the price, i mean what can you really expect from a $25 reel.
Now the bad; (1) hope u don't have a good f*ghter on the line! (2) the gears inside the reel click and grind even if you have a small decently good f*ghting fish / i thought it was going to break the gears inside when reeling in 2-3 pounders. Thats a bad feeling... (3) the feel is only ok, its not super sensitive"

"I paid $25 for this. I bought it to go camping with a bunch of buddies (25 of them and some kids, including my 5 year old) and didn't want to bring an expensive pole that would break easily. Let me tell you while I did re-spool the reel with 4lb test Cajun Red, I loved this thing. Light action for the small rainbows we catch here in California. I caught a few fish and never felt like it gave me numb feeling."

"Good rod, and reel for the money. The only thing about it that I had to replace is the line. Its soo thin, I lost 3 fish last weekend because when I went to set the hook the line snaped. Replace the line and you're golden!"

"i took this rod out for the first time cat fishing, of course i put some big line on it first, and caught a 30" catfish! the rod was very sensitive to tell me when i was getting bites and the reel is phenomenal! had no problem bring it in with a minute. plus i had casted out to about 60 yards too. a great rod, great reel, GREAT DEAL!!!!!"

"this is a very well designed reel and rod combo. The only down side is the reel. I had a couple of problems with it but it worked preety well. I was expecting a little more but it met it purpose. The rod is very strong. I was surprised at how well it performed when i hooked an 8 pounder. I would recommend it to beginners. Now I am moving up to a baitcaster and am preety nervous."

"it a very nice rod but the reel is not so good. when i started reeling it, it started to squeak, and the drag for some reason likes to losen up on the drag, it was so lose that it came off at the front and feel into the water. good thing that the water was shallow ."

"I've used the ugly stick rods, I believe, since they came out. I have had the ultras, the mediums, the 10 or 11 ft. trolling rods and the deep sea casting rods. For a lower priced rod, with good quality, you just can't beat them. I've sent some to my niece's daughters, and soon to the boys. youngsters need some forgiving for taking care of things. The ugly sticks help tremendously. Those baby's are great for teaching youngsters,how to fish, show them "the way" Ol grandpa knows.
They are the best trolling rods money can buy, ( in my opinion) They can handle any sized fish that you can run across.
For the 30 dollar bill most of them cost.............. they cannot be beat.
I still use ,very often, the ulta lite I got about 15 yrs. ago. My favorite ulta."

"This is an excellent rod and reel at an unbelievable price. Anyone would be hard pressed to find a rod and reel of this quality at this price. "If you're looking for an inexpensive combo this is a great route to take. I dont own one myself but my buddy has one that I have used a few times. He caught a 8 1/2 pounder on it and we both have caught several 3 and 4 pounders. Needless to say, it does pretty good. Be sure to keep the reel greased because it can be a major grinder."

"I got thei combo as a gift for trout fishing, so i put on some four pound test and whent out one day to find that the streem was looking like chocklet milk. I then decided to fish the pond to see if i could catch som pan fish to test out my new rod and no less then 30 seconds later i land into a 30 inch carp on four pound test and twenty minuts i land it. through out all this the reel did not have any problems with the drag and i realy doubt that i am going to get anything biger then that on this rod."
