Great motor, July 31, 2009
By FishWhisperer1 from Michigan

Advantages: Durability, Features, High Quality

"I have had mine for three years now without many issues. The foot control is a little difficult to use, so I bought the auto pilot. Sweet setup to be able to control the boat from your fishing pole."

worst idea for a release, July 26, 2009
By IAeliteangler

Disadvantages: Difficult to use, Performance, Quality

"The stow/deploy mechanism on this motor is absolutely terrible. Its so diffucult to use because it is time consuming and takes too much effort. The foot pedal is horrible as well. it is hard to steer and give throttle to it at the same time. BAD MOVE MINN KOTA. I guess there is a reason that KVD uses motor guide trolling motors."

Horrible Foot Pedal, June 6, 2009
By Hugo from Texas

Advantages: Value for money
Disadvantages: Difficult to use, Performance, Quality, foot control, deployment

"I have this motor on a pontoon boat and am looking to probably put a Motor Guide on it for the fact of other than being quite and getting a lot of mileage from a single battery charge, there is little else positive to say about it. As others have stated the deployment is ridiculous. I find it nearly impossible to turn and keep my foot on the thrust button at the same time. So it is basically a one function at a time foot pedal.
I have only used Minn Kota trolling motors on my bass boats for nearly 25 years now, and they basically just shunned me off when I called to complain about the functions of this motors foot pedals.

Adequate motor for bass fishing, May 28, 2009
By charliecfh from Trussville, AL

Advantages: Design, Durability, Features
Disadvantages: deployment

"I purchased the PD55 to replace an old and under powered 30lb thrust Motorguide I have been dealing with for years. The 15 year old MG is still working great, but I could not fish in high winds due to the lack of thrust. I did some comparing and figured MK PD would be the way to go.

My boat has a relatively small front deck, and I like the foot pedal of the MK PD because it saves me a lot of space. The digital steering took a couple of trips to get used to, but I really like it now. There is one drawback with the digital steering; which is you don't have the luxury of changing motor direction at a moment's notice like with the traditional cable style foot controlled motors. This motor can be difficult to maneuver if you are fishing with someone who likes to squirrel fish in the trees.

Another good thing about this MK vs. my old MG is the Digital Maximizer. I don’t know about up to five times as long, but I can certainly fish over twice the time without a battery charge. This is a substantial improvement and motor makes it pretty obvious that technology has come a long way in the last few years.

My beef with the product is the deployment of the motor. It has a locking lever you hold while you slip the shaft through the mount, and theoretically the motor should slide right into the water. However, I often find myself fighting to get the thing in the water. I think the issue is with the lower unit rest on the mount. Maybe after some more use, this mount will break in and deployment will be a lot easier. If it doesn't ease up soon, I'm going to have to figure out a way of modifying the mount to get it to deploy without the lengthy battles.

awesome!, May 19, 2009
By jaiman from Onatrio, Canada

Advantages: Design, Features, Value for money, ease of install!

"so i purchased a V2 about a month ago and ive used now about 10 times.... and well i love it . its certainly a different thing to learn and like all the other reviews it does take a bit of time and practice but when you get it its amazing! the battery life is phenomenal i used it for about 4 hours this past weekend in some seriously choppy water at about midway and i still have half my battery power left! secondly i have a 17 foot boat and with my GPS charting speed i reached 2.7 mph full rip, i know i dont have a very heavy boat but thats quick anyway you look at it!

in conclusion it's a good motor fun to drive and definitly an essential part of your fishing system,a must have!

great on the battery, May 15, 2009
By doctiller from Eau Claire, WI

Advantages: High Quality

"I upgraded to the pd55 from my old model power drive. What a difference on battery life. On fairly calm water, this will move my 18 foot deep v between 1.7-1.9 mph. In chop I was able to go between 1.4-1.7

But where this shines is the battery life. I am getting well over twice the run time from the same batteries I was using with the old motor.

Great purchase, May 13, 2009
By basspro324 from Middletown, IN

Advantages: Design, Features, Value for money
Disadvantages: getting use to the foot pedal

"I bought the 40 # thrust V2 for my 14 foot aluminum john boat and I love it! the foot pedal was tricky to get use to but once I got the hang of it, I love it. It pulls my boat with ease and the ditigal maximizer makes my battery last longer which means more fishing!"

Solid, March 17, 2009
By BASSMAN16 from NJ

"I enjoy the steering on this motor, it does take some time to get used to however once you get the hang of it it is great. I find it much easier to manuever then my old style. The battery usage is good and I have not had any problems with the motor so far.

The one area that is a pain is deploying the motor. It takes some work to release the motor.

Good motor, bad controls, February 17, 2009
By Tony1961 from Central Florida

"I bought a 55# Powerdrive and was happy with the performance but after a year, the foot controls stopped working. The boat was kept covered and the controls were kept in the garage out of the weather. The controls were never wet or abused. First the foot control wouldn't turn the unit to the left and then the speed control quit functioning altogether. I rigged it for manual hand control and the motor still works great. Great motor, problematic foot controls."

Electric (Cheaper Than Gas), May 23, 2008
By soldierboy from Chaumont, NY

"I have had other trolling motors, both cable steer and electric steer. This is the best trolling motor I have ever owned. However, it may not be for everyone. I fish Lake Ontario 99% of the time. Electric steer is much better in rough water, as you can set your direction and do not need to keep your foot on the pedal as you do with cable steer. Although electric steer is not as fast when making steering corrections, or navigating in or aound dock areas. The "digital" maximizer technology is excellent. This motor holds a charge much better than most. I had the earlier model 55 lb thrust powerdrive, and upgraded to this model this year. It keeps it's charge nearly twice as long as the earlier model. For Northern Lakes and rough water, this is the trolling motor best suited for that type of fishing. Due to gas prices, I have found myself using the trolling motor more often, and this motor stays charged long enough to stay out of the water for hours. The extra long foot pedal alows you to steer from anywhere you want on up to a 20 foot boat. This MinnKota model will best any comparitable model of its competitors. Just make sure this is the right style of motor for the type of fishing and the body of water you will use it for."

peace of junk, May 2, 2008
By bwjr from Macon, Ga.

"I bought the Minn Kota 55 Thrust---Do not buy this peace of junk. I can barely release it from it's catch--It is very hard to let down in the water. Almost impossible to navagate near docks and is just a pain to use. I ran into several people who hate it as bad as I do. I wish they had wrote a review before I bought one. Maybe this will help someone from making the same mistake."

Good product overall, April 24, 2008
By Jettman96 from Middle Georgia

"I bought this trolling motor mainly for the "drive by wire" steering feature. I needed this mainly for how my boat is setup, because I couldn't get a cable steer to where I needed it.

Motor -- I have the 55lb thrust motor and it is great for moving 16 foot Carolina Skiff. It will move the boat as fast or as slow as I need it to go.

Battery life -- I can definitely see that "Maximizer" feature makes difference. I have taken the motor about 6 times now and have yet to have to charge the battery. I was worried that the "power" steering would hurt battery life but, it doesn't seem to have affected it at all.

easy of steering -- The "power steering" takes some getting used to and would have to say it is not as sensitive as a cable drive, since you have to "tap" the pedals to make minor/precision direction changes.

stowing -- Stowing takes 2 hands plain and simple. It does secure itself very well and I never have to worry about it popping loose.

Deploying -- Deploying is another 2 handed operation. The deploy assist handle could probably use some tweaking, but, it is simple enough that I don't think I have to worry about breaking or malfunctions too much. A good amount of break-in is required. Mine still isn't broke in all the way.

Overall, I would have to say this is a very good product that could use a little extra tweaking. But, given the choice I would say stick with cable steering if you can.

A different motor, April 22, 2008
By Rooster278 from IL

"This motor has pro's and con's. The batteries last a long time. The power gauge to see the strengh of the batteries is nice. I have the 70 lbs version and it pulls my 20' boat with a lot of power. I was use to the old cable style system and found it took much longer to turn the motor with this style. You have to wait for the motor to turn the shaft. The motor also hangs over the front of the bow the way it is mounted and hits things very easily since it hangs out the front of the boat. It also takes two hands to deploy the motor and to bring it back into the boat. If you want to put a transducer on the motor there is no way to secure the transducer cord to the shaft due to the way the motor is deployed. I also had to purchase a RAM mount for the motor to keep the shaft from bouncing around in rough water or on bumpy roads. I would recomend buying a RAM mount which can be purchased for around $50.00. If I had to do it all over again I would go back to the older cable style system or buy the version with the built in transducer."
