Cast far and retrieves fast!,July 6, 2009

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money
"Used the rod for the first time yesterday July 5th 2009. I tied on a 3/8 oz Nemire Red Ripper and it cast like a bullet for 50 plus feet. The rod is exceptionally flexible of course being an Uglystick rod and really launches your bait out.
Can't wait to battle a fish soon. We had several storms on the day I went out and had to dock several times to wait it out. But we will update you further. Look for the pics!"

"it does the job, just don't go over 15 pounds....more and over you are in trouble, so far, under that range is a pretty good choice and a very sensitive rod. in general a good combination for the price"

Not an ugly deal,May 11, 2008
By caddy43from Badin Lake, Albemarle, NC
"I bought this rod and reel combo last week and of all my ugly stiks it is my favorite. In three days i've caught a 6 lb. bass, a 5lb. one some crappie and afew bream. No matter what species your're going for it is the best. It's strong, reliable and its at a price that any fisher would be pleased at."

very decent performance and dirt cheap,June 18, 2007
By oldrockfan
"I purchased two ugly stik combos for a recent fishing trip to the texas coast. I got oneo of the these 50 size combos with the 7 foot rod and one of the larger combos that came with the 8 foot rod and the prius reel. Both rigs were used for specs to about 20 inches and jetty fishing for small sharks. I'll start by saying I did like the 8 foot rig better but it cost about 60 while this one cost only 35 so not really apples to apples. I had the 7 footer loaded with 15 pound big game which performed well and seemed to be a good match for this setup. On trout it was no contest. I was easily able to rip them in and the rod had enough backbone to hoist them up on the pier although it did flex quite a bit on the heavier trout. On the sharks from 1-3 feet at the jetty, it wasn't quite as impressive. The lack of backbone and shorter length meant many more snags on the rocks. The rod just didn't quite have enough backbone to control even a small shark. The 8 foot ugly stik combo with the prius reel on the other hand, worked pretty well on the 1-3 foot sharks. The 8 foot rod and the reel with better drag and heavier 20 pound big game line, made a real difference. So if you are looking for a low cost reel that can handle smaller ocean species, this rig will work. If you want to try larger species such as redfish or small sharks, I'd upgrade to the ugly stik combo with the 2 piece 8' rod and prius reel. Oh and I should mention that the bail was a bit stiff at first on mine but did start breaking in after a couple days and now works pretty smooth. Yes, the reel has a bit of slop in it and isn't quite as smooth reeling as the higher end spinning rigs but I guarantee this is the best combo you can get for under $40."
