Hornady .17 HMR 20gr. Reviewed

,
February 20, 2012
By Suite17
Advantages: Performs well, Value for money
Disadvantages: must adjust for damage to game
"I have benched and field tested the following major manufacturers .17 HMR ammo on the market. CCI, Remington,Winchester,Hornady and Federal.
When testing every available type of .17 HMR round produced by the manufacturer was used. 17gr through 20gr, FMJ, JHP, Nylon tipped configurations were tested. The bench tests were performed both at outdoor ranges up to 275 yards as well as indoor ranges out to 75 yards. In the field the rounds were tested in various conditions. Air temperatures from 104 to 20 degrees F. Calm to gusting winds up to 35 mph. Test days ranged from dry and sunny to freezing rain / snow. Targets varied from paper and wooden targets / wooden silhouettes of 1 inch thickness, up to 3/8 thick steel plates and of course live game as well.
Both Marlin and Savage .17 HMR rifles were used for the testing.
The following review is offered to you from experience gained in these tests.
Staged Targets/Silhouettes
Type Ammo: Hornady .17 HMR 20gr FMJ
Accuracy: Excellent
Speed: Excellent
Power: Excellent
Penetration: Excellent ( clean punch through 3/8 steel plate at 50 yards, complete penetration and conical exit damage through 1/8 Galvanized plate over 1 inch thick wooden board at 125 yards) Note: .22 Long Rifle round merely left a heavy dent in the plate during this test.
Damage: Excellent
Trajectory: Very good (Push out from heavy cross winds, straying from heavy rainfall effected rating)
Game
Type Ammo: Hornady .17 HMR 20gr FMJ
Accuracy: Excellent
Speed: Excellent
Penetration: Excellent
Damage: Very good (The round is over powered for smaller game such as Squirrel and some Rabbits damage to the target is extensive enough to render some of the meat useless) Recommended for Woodchuck or larger up to Coyote depending on distance to Coyote. Under 100 yards is preferred for .17 HMR.
Trajectory: Very good (Push out from heavy cross winds, straying from heavy rainfall effected rating)
Overall rating: Excellent
Other Ammo performed well also. However it is out of the scope of this review."

"JUST GOT BACK FROM SOUTH DAKOTA WHERE I WAS SHOOTING PRAIRIE DOGS. TRIED THE 17 GRAIN LAST YEAR AND WS EFFECTED BY THE WIND. I TRIED THE 20 GRAINS THIS YEAR AND OUT TO 100 YARDS FOUND THEM TO BE MOST ACCURATE AND LETHAL"

CHECK ZERO

"I am a hornady user and have been for years. I like this ammo, however I would suggest that anyone using these for the first time, check their zero if this is the first time using this ammo. I found that my barrel does not like these rounds as well as the v-max .17 grain. Even after a complete re-sight, I would have an occasional flier. I do like these shells and would recommend them to anyone, just take the time to compare groupings to your others. The HMR was developed to be a tack driver with the ballistic tips and that needs to be considered when shooting hollow points....Great round!!"

"I have now owned the .17 HMR for about 2 years after having purchased a 17. HM2 first. I love both cartridges. I have shot many a coyote, fox, and bobcat with these rounds and have had nothing but good results."

"Ran this ammo through a Savage 93R17 heavy barrel and shot half-inch groups at 100yds. Better than any other ammo brand/type that I've tried in this rifle. Consistent too!! This is my "go-to" round for groundhogs and other varmints."

Praire Dogs Beyond 200 Yards

,
June 22, 2006
By JR
from Southern California
"I have owned a 17HMR for three years and have had the opportunity to regularly shoot varmits up to 150 yards with the Hornady Vmax. Recently, during a praire dog hunt in Montana, the weather was dry and the wind was minimal. With those favorable conditions, the effective range of the Hornady Vmax was extended up to 280 yards with many praire dogs consistently zapped between 200-250 yards. It is truely an amazing little round that hits big."
