Advantages: Ease of use
Disadvantages: Quality, Durability
"I bought the XL vest for my 70ish lbs. lab last year. At fhe time of purchase I was happy with the vest. It has multiple stitches on the seams for customizing the fit. Now two weeks left in her second season with the vest...it is starting to fall apart. The seams started coming apart at the beginning of season. now the camo and kevlar is separating from the actual neoprene. Also the neoprene is tearing across the chest. To the vest's credit it has been used a lot...and it has made a couple of barb wire fences and we hunt in water full of limbs and button willows. I am just disappointed that she will need another vest. If I buy a 50 dollar hunting jacket for me...I would expect more than two seasons."

"Save $10 more and buy yourself a different one. I bought one for my dog and it has 2" tears in the seams at the armpits after only 2 hunts. The dog was not put through anything difficult. This vest simply DOES NOT handle the elements like it should."

very poor quality

Disadvantages: Performance, Quality, Durability
"Rarely can I be critical of a BP product, but this vest is terrible. The zipper will not stay closed and is tearing away from the neoprene after 4 uses. The other seams started tearing on the first use. To be clear, it is the proper size for the dog, it is just a very poorly made vest. DO NOT BUY ONE!"

"Me and my hunting buddy purchased these vests for our dogs for duck hunting. Both of the vests were torn under the arms after the very first hunt and coming apart at the seems above the shoulders. ONE HUNT!!!!!! The vests are junk."

Limited Sizes

,
July 3, 2011
By ZebsterBC
Disadvantages: limited fit, limited sizes
"The smallest size (Medium), was too big for my border collie. Even if they had a smaller size, it was clear after looking at the construction that it was made to fit a dog with a rounder chest. I understand that these were made for retrievers, which usually have that body type, but I'm writing this review for others like myself who are looking for a vest for other breeds that swim for recreation and need something to keep warm. If you have a dog with a deep, narrow chest, take them into the store to try this on or think twice before buying."

Should have Bought Remington

,
June 13, 2011
By Muttnut
from Ontario
Disadvantages: falls apart in 3 outings, very poorly made
"I bought this Vest for my dog for safety running threw the bush etc I had it on one of my dogs for maybe a few outing not going into the bush but to my neighbors pond just threw the fields over etc it is very poorly made the Kevlar was very frayed the neoprene is coming apart at the armpit area of one hanging on by a few tread. It’s really bad that I’ve only been out 3 times with it on my dog and it had fallen apart. I should have bought another Remington one since I’ve had that one for a few years for my other dog and it is in still great working condition with my one dog that has run threw everything and anything."

quality product

Advantages: Performs well, Value for money, Quality
"I purchased this vest 3 days before the last day of duck in NC. My Lab is trim and athletic and runs Hunt test and upland, and the measurements of 19" collar and 31" chest was right on from a fit standpoint. A little wide under the front chest opening between the legs, but very easily marked with an edge of soap and trimmed with my tin snips. He did a ton of running, loved it in the cold water on that 22 degree morning with no chafing or rubs in any area. Zipper was husky I thought, and the velcro enabled some take up, but not much as the zipper set the closure size. Very pleased !!"

"Love the vest, but the zipper broke the 2nd time I used it. I would recommend it to other hunters (in fact I have) as long as you're ok with needing a partner to help you zip it up."

Advantages: Ease of use, Durability, Performs well, Value for money, Quality
Disadvantages: sizes are a little mis-leading
"I bought this vest two years at the beginning of the 2009 duck season and hunt at least once a week every season. It has lasted very well for me so far and no problems with the zipper. She beats it to death in the thick tules we hunt and there has been only minimal seam and stitching damage. The sizes do run a little small as my 80lb female lab fit into a XL with no rub marks on the dog. I don't know if I got lucky with the quality on this one based on many of the reports, but I have been very happy with it and will buy another when the time comes."

"The pleeted design really lets you give this vest a custome fit. The only thing I dont like is that the neck is to loose. My chessy weighs 85 lbs the large vest is to small and XL is very big in the neck but fits every else."

Good vest, poor zipper

Advantages: Performs well, Quality
Disadvantages: Difficult to use
"The vest seems to be of very high quality overall, but they really skimped on the zipper. All of my previous vests, which by the way some cost only half what this one did, always came with a large tooth zipper, which made putting it on an exicted dog very simple. This zipper is much more fine toothed, so it makes the job a lot more difficult. They really missed the boat on this one."

Good Vest , But Hard to Size

Advantages: Ease of use, Value for money
Disadvantages: Difficult to use
"I have what i thought was a medium size yellow lab hardly 70lbs and in very good shape so i bought a medium vest which didnt fit so i tryed a large which wouldnt zip up so then tryed and XL which actualy fit. vest looks good and seems to stand up good. I recommend buying at least one size larger than what you think the size your dog is, size scale is not very acurate so use your best judgement before buying. Bass Pro is very good about returns if you need to exchange sizes. But overall not a bad buy, your dog will thank you on the cold days"

Wet suit kit

,
January 17, 2009
By Piedmont
"The best reason to recommend this is that your dog can wear this on a cold day and you don't have to be embarrassed if your buddies see you walking your dog. Even if you don't hunt, that's a good thing.
This is a wet suit for a dog. There is a fair chance you will have to modify it before it is right for your dog.
I bought the first one when I was alone. At the checkout I found out that I can bring my dog in the store. That's one more reaon I like to shop there. I exchanged the first one for one I got to try on my dog at the store. No problem there either.
The product comes with a handle you can use to get the dog into the boat. - good. Two narrow pockets along each side seem ready for tiny floatation devices. - ??? I replaced the zipper tab with a sturdy split ring and a strap. Plan on replacing the zipper tab before you get out in the field.
Unless you get a good fit right out of the bag, consider getting a larger size and then tailor it as needed."

"I had a hard time finding a vest that would comfortably fit my lab. This vest seem to be the answer. The fit is perfect and very little trimming was needed. However, the first time I put the vest on my dog the zipper broke. I returned the vest and replaced it with the same model. I don't believe this vest will last the season. I'll know more after the first cold morning in the blind."

Bad Zipper Change

,
January 21, 2008
By Pecoy
from Tulsa, OK
"Bass Pro changed the zipper on their vest from what it used to be. The new zipper is smaller, weaker, and just plain cheap. I have had to take 2 vests back for exchange because the zipper broke the first time putting it on the dog. The only reason I even took it back for exchange is no one else in town had a vest big enough for my dog. I am fixing to take the third vest back and get my money back since I am using another vest and season is about over. I will never buy a Redhead vest again unless they change their zipper. I had one that lasted almost two years of hard hunting, it had the heavy duty zipper. Bass Pro made a big mistake with the zipper change."

IF YOU LIKE PLASTIC

"I PICKED THIS ITEM UP AT THE NEW BASS PRO IN RANCHO CUCAMONGA,CA , WHEN I GOT HOME I TRIED IT ON MY BLACK LAB AND THE ZIPPER BROKE. THE ZIPPER IS MADE OF PLASTIC, SO ON THOSE COLD DUCK HUNTING MORNINGS IT WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO HOLD UP TO THE TEST. I AM JUST GLAD IT BROKE BEFORE I GOT OUT TO THE FIELD AND SO IS MY DOG."
