good value, February 27, 2008
By wicho from Puerto Rico

"After having tried a few reels these Newell impressed me on how ligth they are,the brake an clicker are also very good.I use the 300and 400 models the 200 i didnt like that much since they pinch line between the spool and frame. The 447's are the ones i like the most for line capacity and size.Very eay to take down, good value.Have turned my gold reels into decorating pieces."

Excellent casting reel, August 20, 2007
By Ddubclown from SoCal

"I own a 338 that I have spooled with 30lb. mono on a jig stick for casting to albies.
I bought this reel exclusively for casting swimbaits on the slide and I am not disappointed. On those hit and miss stops early in the year when you need to get your bait out away from the boat quickly to get bit these reels are the ticket for the intermediate fisherman.
The drag on my Newell isn't as smooth as my Sealine 50, much less my Trinidad 20, but it casts better than both of them (especially the Trinidad).
What the Newell lacks in drag or durabilty it makes up for in castability and weight.
It definitely fills a niche on an overnight or two day tuna trip. I've taken my Newell on one overnight trip and one two day trip, and caught 3 albies when I was the only one to get hooked up besides the trolling jig strike.
(Once on the overnight / twice on the 2 day).
I was able to do this due to the Newell's castability. I'm not a pro so the Newell 338 gets the credit. A great reel for the niche/money.

Buy One, January 28, 2007
By Nautigator from Gainesville

"I have 9 of these reels from a 220 to P533 5.5. They are super light, fast retrive (buy the slower for heavy bottom fishing) and built to last. I have a P454 that I bought when I was in middle school, I am 34 now. Other than changing the drag washers a few times and rebuilding a clicker now and then, I have had no other issues with any of my reels. I would consider this regular maintenance in any reel. The best part is that the bridge plate is rivieted together and anyone can do the work. Try that with a Penn, much less the Shimanos..."

Great reels, July 6, 2006
By Don Rojo from San Ramon, CA

"I have used the Newel 338 and 220 for about 15 years now. They are flat out the best reels available. They are light, durable and extremely dependable. They are very easy to break down and clean. The 338 I use on a 9ft Calstar jig stick exclusively with 30# line. I have caught too many yellowtail and tuna to count. Largest on this setup is 65# bluefin tuna. The 220 is the ultimate calico bass, shallow water rockfish to small yellowtail reel. The jackpots I have won on Southern California boats using this equipment have paid for the reels many time over. As an ex-captain of San Diego's Sportfishing fleet I have seen my share of equipment."
