don't do it, October 16, 2009
By turkeymerck from North GA

Advantages: it seems cheap for a baitcast combo
Disadvantages: Difficult to use, Durability, Performance

"I'm a big Browning fan but this setup for $80 is garbage. My brother got it on sale for like $50 for a starter baitcaster. He winded up giving it to me cause he just couldn't use it. It is almost like an old-school baitcaster with no magnetic braking (even though it claims to have a few, don't think they work). You basically just have to control the spool with your thumb. I may be exaggerating a little but if you don't use your thumb on every cast, your gonna backlash. The components used are just not good quality either.

Oh, and the rod is just a good bull bream buggy whip. Not really for bass fishing. However, you can get some unreal twitchin action on a fluke with it!

Would go with a step up in the Browning lineup or a decent little combo from BP if you want a starter combo or just a good, cheap setup.

Ok, July 15, 2009
By ElsinoreRider from Texas

Advantages: Value for money
Disadvantages: Durability

"I got this rod on sale for 50$ at BPS. The reel felt really smooth, and the rod had a nice feel to it. After a couple fishing trips, the reel started sticking on the retrieve. I guess you could compare the feeling to a really bad flat spot on a tire. Eventually it loosened up and the reel has been ok. Another problem with the reel that I've had is that it is really hard to cast anything somewhat light. I can't cast smaller Rapalas with it, or most weightless plastics. I guess I'll stick to spinning gear for those situations. I've taken the combo to the salt a couple times, and I'll say right now it is a bad idea to use this combo for saltwater fishing. There are two problems with it. One, the reel will absolutely not hold up to salt. It was getting rougher and harder to reel while I was still fishing, before I could even rinse it off. That really bothered me. The other issue is the rod. While it actually is fairly sensitive and hauls in bass without too much difficulty, it doesn't have enough backbone. On hard hooksets on reds the rod flexes so hard you kind of loose control of it. It'll bring the fish in but it definately feels overpowered on anything larger than a 5 pound bass. Overall, I would say that this would be an ok combo for the beginner to learn on, but if you're a serious fisherman I would look elsewhere."

Great reel, not so much the rod, July 5, 2009
By Hebson3553 from Chicago, Il

Disadvantages: Durability, Performance

"Made the horrible mistake of buying this rod/reel combo. The reel is really nice and very smooth (still using it), but the rod tip snapped after 1 use. Brought it into BPS 3 days later and they gave me the black bass rod for nothing (has a lot better feel). Clearly having problems with durability before. would have given it 1 star , but i love the reel..."

Im tickled to death w/ this combo, June 14, 2009
By Dadnlad from Illinois

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Value for money
Disadvantages: Appearance, Performance

"Ive always had a hard time casting a with these reels tons of backlashes and too much time pulling line. So Ive always used spinning reels. My youngest son told me 2 weeks ago after we bought our first boat. Dad you always buy us (him and my oldest son) really good stuff but you always get stuff thats just ok. Lets buy you something nice. OK 80 dollars isnt the best stuff either but I didnt wanna spend a ton for the same old not cast-able reel to begin again. I took this out in the yard started casting for an hour an did NOT have 1 backlash now we've taken fishing but havent caught anything on it yet but I do like it in fact may get another!!!! NICE COMBO NICE PRICE"

not what i wanted but i like it now, June 8, 2009
By sigk1874 from Stockbridge, GA

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money

"I got talked into this rod in-store and was a bit irked about it later - I wanted a shorter, spinning combo just to take my son bank fishing. However, I was determined to learn how to use the thing. A friend's fiance is a tournament angler, and after spending 5 minutes with him, I was throwing without backlashing. Although I still bought what I wanted later, I really like the way this one feels much more than the spinning reel! I'm looking forward to getting more and more comfortable with it!"

Very Good, May 13, 2009
By JDPadge from KY

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money

"My brother and I had a raincheck for a different rod/reel combo but they never arrived at the store, although we were called to say they had arrived. Long story short, the manager working that day took care of us. He offered us these Browning combo's instead that the lesser price of the Bass Pro mega cast combo.
They work very well I got 2 and my brother took 1. So far they have lived up and beyond my expectations. I'm taking them Striper fishing this weekend so we'll be sure to let you know how they fair against Lake Cumberland stipers!!

Rod & Reel Combo, May 1, 2009
By johnsobm14 from Myrtle Beach, SC

"Rod was great, graphite was a nice addition to a poor reel. The reel constantly tangled and when it was cast a decent distance, the like would lock midway through and sent my lure flying into the water. I dont recommend this combo to anyone, rod yes, reel definately not"

horrible, April 26, 2009
By TylerJM from Louisiana

Advantages: easy to return to store
Disadvantages: Durability, Performance, reeling sticks

"This Rod is Great. However the reel is absolutely horrible. After catching several bass the grooves and bearings would stick and make the reeling horrible. The Guide has stopped moving and after buying one then trading it out for another and having it break too, i will be getting a different reel/rod combo."

Browning Stalker combo, February 28, 2009
By USMCcareerist from Dallas, Georgia

"Currently own 4 of these combos, in different sizes. The only problem that I had was when someone slung a battery on top of one of the rods and broke it. The reels throw great and the rod has stood up to some pretty big fish. The MH 6'6" has an awesome finesse feel. You never have to worry about distinguishing a bite from structure. I will continue to buy these combos until provin otherwise...."

"I bought this combo when i was was 13 and i have worn the lettering off the reel and for 2 years this reel has worked GREAT. I had it set to where i could cast with no backlash. And just 3 weeks ago the line guide started jambing. Thats the Only problem i have EVER had with this reel."

"i recently purchased this combo while on vacation, got it home took it to the lake and the worm bar was sticking and the bearings were going bad on the second time i used it. the mistake i made was purchasing the combo before i read the reviews because it seems to be a repeated problem. i am contacting bps today about what can be done but browning didnt live up to its name."

Nice Rod Poor Reel, May 2, 2008
By brickwar

"I have had 2 now 1st one had grinding and slipping during retrieve, returned to Bass Pro, received newer model?? worked great for 1st 5-6 hours then started locking up. Very difficult to reel, taking it back today. Will stay away from this model in the future.

Based on other reviews seems to be a design flaw.

good first baitcaster, April 17, 2008
By stymie167

"This was my first baitcaster, i got it for my birthday and it didnt take long until i had figured out all of the settings and was casting without backlash on virtually every cast. the casting distance is good but the only problem i have noticed is the line guide tends to grind sometimes and it makes reeling a little rough. but that problem comes and goes. i lubed the area and havent had a problem with it the last two times ive gone. Overall a great reel and good pole i wish i would have learned to fish baitcasters earlier in my life."

Second reel worked better, February 28, 2008
By Homerj92000 from Virginia

"I bought this and the first time I used it, I felt a grinding noise in the reel. Bass pro replaced the reel for free and the second one works like a champ! I use mostly topwater, cause its the highest ratio that I have and it works fairly good (Looking for a 7.0:1 now). Landed a few decent size bass, up to 5 pounds, and several striper hybrids up to 3 pounds. Works good for me, a weekender."
