A distant cousin, November 26, 2008
By SRods from Washington

"I have had 6 months to work a Cape Point in a variety of circumstances. My reason for purchasing a Cape Point is that I have several custom rods built in the same simple, handle free, minimalist configuration and really like that style. I wanted to give an OM a chance. The savings over a custom rod is substantial and I thought I may find I like a mass produced rod of the same style as well as a more expensive custom rod costing hundreds of dollars more. After six months I find it to be similar to the custom rods I own in appearance and concept but a "distant cousin" in quality and performance. My first outing exposed a weakness in the wraps and or finish that secure the plate reel seat. The finish began to crack around the wraps and has lead to partial separation of the reel seat which is now secured with stretch tape. Another fault I find with the Cape Point is the guide spacing and the 40mm 1st guide which is very small, better suited to a 7' spinning rod than a twelve foot lead launcher. This small guide does cause some line slap and is troublesome with light ( >20lb ) braids. They bunch up and wrap the guide. Despite the handi-cap this distant cousin of a true custom surf stick performs very well on the beach. It will handle 3-6 ozs of weight and bait in the wind and loads smoothly without going mushy. It is light in the hand for a stout 12' rod and flip her over and that smaller guide becomes a moot point with a conventional reel mounted on top. [ Please note: a smaller reel foot such as found on an Abu 6500 or 7000 will not hold securely on this particular reel seat, you have to clamp it.] I find the blank more than sturdy enough and even managed a few over size sturgeon to the beach with it. It looks good and business like without being drab. The reel seat has held up (it is a top of the line Fuji plate reel seat) the guides are not scoring with the use of braid, the rod joint is still tight and does not slip. You can get more performance from a custom rod in the same configuration but only by spending several hundred more dollars which makes this series of rods a great deal to take to the beach."

i love this surf rod, October 19, 2007
By djw from Md

"purchased the 11' (6-12oz) model about a month ago. casts like a dream. haven't tried a pendulum cast on it but, handles a OTG very well. very light weight. very sturdy. best available guides and reel seat featured. so far has handled fish very nicely. plenty of blues and stripers. so far, biggest test has been a cow nose ray measuring 50" (wingspan). NO PROBLEM."

Poor quality rod, October 17, 2007
By Angler from Texas

"Purchased the 12' rod for surf casting, using lure weight within the 3-6oz rating. 1 hour later the rod split in two, it couldnt handle pendulum cast technique. Rod blank is very poor quality and doesn't compare to other surf rods I own. Fortunately, return policy is simple. I liked the reel seats, but a waste putting them on this rod."
