Penn 850SS,May 11, 2006
By Saltwateranglerfrom Southern California
"Last summer I purchased a Penn 850SS reel for my brother for an offshore tuna trip in Southern California. This is a charter that we hire every summer for a two day trip to chase yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, calico bass, and barracuda. At the same time I purchased another spinning reel for twice the money. The baitrunner feature on my new Thunnus by Shimano went into "overdrive" and was totally useless. However to my good fortune my brother got sick when we caught the tail end of a hurricane and it got a little rocky. The Penn 850SS performed flawlessly loaded up with 50# Stren Super Braid and thirty to forty pound yellowfin were landed with virtually no effort.Even the California yellowtail over twenty pounds which are pound for pound twice the fight of a Yellowfin were landed with no problem. This Penn reel is so smooth it almost takes the fun out the fight. We have another trip in August and my son will going this year and I will be buying him a new Penn 850SS."

"I purchased a Penn 650SSm reel and a 12 foot surf rod while in Gulf Shores and fished from the beach. I have to say that the reel performed perfectly. I looked at the 750SSm but it felt a little heavy for what I wanted it for. If I were to go out on a boat, the 750 would be the way to go. I love my Penn reel and surf rod and recommend it highly. I', thinking about getting another next year so I can catch more fish."

Penn = Quality !,July 4, 2009
By willfish4foodfrom Kansas
Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design
"I have always used Penn bait casters and have enjoyed the superior durability and quality they provide. I needed a reel that would cast a mile into deep holes from shore, I bought the 850 SSm and paired it with a 9' custom surf rod. I use it for large catfish and it works great."

First Choice,April 20, 2008
By supersscottfrom Florida panhandle
"There is no gear on the market that can make your day on the water more enjoyable than Penn. My recent purchase of the Penn 750ssm was only regretable since I didn't get one sooner. My Penn baitcasters work FLAWLESSY. Much to my hesitation, the balecaster works just as well. Fully intend to purchase again. TOP OF THE LINE PRODUCT! The people sitting around the water,,,,, they don't have Penn gear."

solid workhorse reel,March 14, 2008
By InshoreOffshoreFloridafrom Orlando, FL
"bought this reel (650 model) about 6 years ago and have caught 25+ pound mahi out of canaveral as well as bull reds in the intercoastal. I purchased a second smaller one for inshore only. I take them apart once a year and re-grease them. I have never had a problem with them."

Surf Fishing and Tuna Killers!,January 27, 2008

"People often ask me on fishing forums what particular spinning setup I recommend for surf fishing and offshore setups. Well outside a single piece 12 foot pole I suggest the Penn SSm series reels. Why? Because these reels are bulletproof and proven. Even the harsh conditions of our Gulf coast do little do damage or cause one to loss faith in such a reel. Now, sure, they are not the smoothest, nor the prettiest, but when it comes push to shove these are all action. Sharks, Jacks, Rays, Macks, Kings, Dorado, Snapper, AJ and Tuna have all fallen victim in my boat with these rigs. During the redfish run in fall down on the Texas coast these are my goto surf setups.I Spool up with 65# braid with a 30 yards #30 Diamond Momi backing these are pure saltwater fishing machines. Another thing I love about these reels is the common availability of parts and potential custom upgrades offered. The drag and the anti-reverse are the mechanisms I would upgrade if you plan to target larger pelagic fish. If you upgrade then you can now spool up with #80 braid. Remember these reels were meant to take a beating so don't hesitate to put them to the test!"

950 WHAT A GREAT REEL,October 9, 2007
By seadog902from Kissimmee,Florida
"I USED MY 950 AT THE SKYWAY PIER TO FISH FOR GROUPER TALK ABOUT PUTTING A STOP TO THIER FLIGHT . RARELY DO I LET OFF ON THE DRAG WHEN I FISH FOR GROUPER . BECAUSE ONCE THEY HIT YOU KNOW THAT THE FIRST THING THE GROUPER IS GOING TO DO IS HEAD FOR THE ROCKS OR ANYWHERE THAT HE CAN GET THE LINE TO BREAK. WELL THIS WEEKEND WAS NO EXCEPTION THE GROUPERS WHERE BITING AND I WAS CATCHING. AFTER AWHILE THE BITE SLOWED DOWN A BIT SO I DECIDED TO SIT DOWN AND TALK TO MY WIFE, WELL NEXT THING WE KNOW THE REEL STARTED SCREAMING LIKE A BANSHEE. THE FISH GOT PLENTY OF LINE OFF THE SPOOL IN FACT I WAS AFRAID I WAS GOING TO GET SPOOLED OUT. WELL I TIGHTEN DOWN ON THE DRAG SOME MORE AND FOUGHT MY FISH TO MY AMUSEMENT THE FISH THAT WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LINE HAPPENED TO BE A SUPER TARPON . I'M PROUD TO SAY THAT MY PENN 950 ACTED FLAWLESSLY AND IF IT WASN'T THAT THE LEADER ITSELF BROKE THAT TARPON WOULD HAVE BEEN IN MY PICTURE BOOK.
BOY I WISH THEY MADE LEADERS THE WAY MY PENN IS MADE. HA HA"

Best $139.99 you could spend on!,September 7, 2007
By Yo Daddy!
"I've purchased the reel 850ssm several days ago and paired it with a customized 14ft fiberglass rod for fishing at the dam and it's AWESOME. Very smooth and the drag is powerful. One thing I love about this reel is the straight handle retrieval it feature because it makes it real easy to retrieve your line and you can also get bigger ratio. I recommend the 850ssm over the 750ssm, they have the same body except the spool on the 850ssm is bigger."

one of the best reels EVER made!,August 20, 2007
By grouper king
"Every year at the end of summer, me and my family (my brother my cousin my aunt and uncle my mom and dad drive to the keys. this year i decided to buy a Penn spinfisher SSm 850 with an ugly stick for my cousin for his birthday right before the trip. I bought myself a Daiwa Saltiga Blast Spinning Reel. The SAB4500 model. We travel from the keys all the way up the gulf side and stop at louisiana. then we come back to the keys in our boat. during our fishing trip we cought a whole bunch of dolphin, big mutton snapper, king fish, lots andlots of tuna, a few sword fish, and a ton of 60-80 pound grouper. The biggest fish we caught was a 138 pound grouper on aPenn international torque reel. the trq300 model. The Daiwa Saltiga Blast Spinning Reel work like a dream reeling in the big snapper, dolphin, and tuna. The Penn spinfisher work awesome too. it worked as good if not better than the Daiwa Saltiga Blast Spinning Reel. The penn spinfisher reel is a lot more affordable too. This was the top 3 reels on the boat and alot more cheaper too. I would recommend this reel to anyone who is serious about fishing or to people who just like fishing. Its the best reel you can buy at that price and still have that Penn quality. I cureently own 2 of the 750 model and 1 of the 850 model. I willbuy the 950 model next. This reel is great for begginers and pros!"
