Cast Iron cooking,November 7, 2007
By CampingGSD
"I used this cast iron pot for the first time on my last camping trip. I used it to both boil water over a charcoal/wood fire and to cook maccaroni and cheese. I first washed the pot when i got it him and then seasoned it again with cooking oil. It did great cooking the mac and cheese. When it came time to strain the pasta, i just tilted the lid a little, and using two potholders, held the handles on the side of the pot and the lid in place and tipped the pot over and drained the water. Not a single noodle was lost and in the end the mac and cheese was great.
To clean the pot at the campsite, i ate the mac and cheese, then put in some more water and got that to boil over the coal/wood fire, then scrubbed the pot with a scrubbing sponge, rinsed, then dried it back on the fire then gave it a spray with olive oil cooking spray. When i got home, i rinsed it again because it had gotten dirty from the campsite in general. When you wash it (try not to use soap, if you do a find that organic soap does better overall) stick it on the stove to dry it, then while the pot is still hot, oil it again."
