Almost perfect, September 23, 2009
By Olebiker from Tallahassee, FL

Advantages: Design, Features, High Quality, Value for money

"I installed the 55# variable speed on my 1984 Bass Tracker Tournament TX about three months ago. It is nearly silent and is solid as a rock.

The digital feature makes it possible to fish all day in the wind on one deep cycle battery and still have plenty of power at the end of the day.

The "soft start' is another great feature. Unlike my old 40# Edge, I can start on the highest power without getting thrown out of the boat.

I would have given it five stars except that, when I got it, the directional arrow wouldn't turn. I had to disassemble the head and install the gears correctly. The unit had obviously not gone through a quality control inspection.

I don't recommend the Digital Maximizer, May 17, 2009
By RickfromLafayette from Lafayette, Louisiana

Disadvantages: Performance

"I purchased the 55lb (12v) with the Digital Maximizer because my boat only has one deep cycle battery and I wanted to get the most time out of it. I paid the difference in price for the Digital Maximizer over the 5 speed and I have been sorry. The first day on the water the switch wouldn't work. Sometimes it did, sometimes it didn't and sometimes, it would stay on continuosly while in Momentary mode. I don't have a warantee dealer in my town so I'm stuck with having to ship the motor to a dealer in another state. My boat dealer doesn't work on Minkotas. I have a brand new boat and can't even use it. I have been told on many message boards that a lot of people are having problems with the Digital Maximizer.
Stay away from this feature.

A MUST HAVE, March 1, 2009
By troyvtx1300 from Texarkana Tx.

"I have used my Minn Kota Maxxum 24 volt 70 lb. thrust twice now and I'am so glad I chose this one. The new design of the foot pedel is so easy and comfortable. The first day out I put this thing to the test, and it truly is 4-wheel drive for your boat. Through grass, weeds, sticks and stumps this motor wanted to go where I did and wanted to stay longer than me to. It is a must have!"

"i bought this motor last week.hooked it up and noticed the foot pedal is diffrent than in the picture.it has a half moon button and pictured is the circle button. after trying to use it,the button would not work. the motor would work in the constant on position but would not work in the switched position. long story short the new button design does not work very well ."

ONE TOUGH TROLLING MOTOR, March 16, 2008
By hickboy from LOCUST FORK, AL

"I have this trolling motor on my boat in the variable speed 70 pound thrust foot controlled unit. Minn Kota makes a quality product in this, as I have put it through some rough conditions with no problems."

Better Than Any Other, January 18, 2008
By 5largemouth from Oklahoma

"I have a 74lb thrust on my boat a 20' Skeeter, the only problem that I have had was during a tournament on Lake Fork, the board inside fried on high speed and it was either full power or none, took it to the boat shop and had it replaced for FREE, could not be happier, I put my equipment to the test and this is one that has never failed. I can stay on location in high wind have actually ran it during a 2 day tournament with out charging the batteries and had plenty of power for a 3rd day"

Takes a beating and keeps on moving!, November 15, 2007

"MK is the only brand I would recommend. It has been a very dependable trolling motor and an excellent value. I have used another major brand with very poor results so buy MK and you will not have trolling motor problems preventing you from fishing!"

king of the hill, September 30, 2007
By runt 4561

"i have owned 10+ trolling motors in the past 20 years. i have used both minn kotas and motorguides. needless to say i will never waiste money on another motorguide. my current trolling motor is almost 4 years old and is a 74lb maxxum. i fisrt purchased a maxxum in 2000 and vowed i would never purchase anything else. the quietest on the market and can go through more cover than a motor guide. i believe the motor guides may be a little faster but if you want to go fast, crank up the outboard. if you fish around any kind of vegetation this is a must have. true they are pricey but once you get one, you will kick yourself in the rear for not getting one sooner. all of my friends that i have convinced to purchase one have all thanked me in the end. it really makes the day on the water more pleasureful."

customer service?, July 25, 2007
By crazygunsmith from ocklawaha florida

"i recently purchased a 65 lb all terain on sale and the motor head fell off on the second fishing trip. I had the unit 20 days. I called customer service about it and all i got from them was alot of im sorrys and they would not exchange the unit for like model or upgrade and insisted i get the unit repaired.(2 to 3 weeks turn around if there was no parts problems)lucky for me bass pro shops took the unit back for a full refund and i purchased this maxum 70lb variable speed unit. i took it for a test drive today and it works very well and im quite pleased with it.I do have concerns with the way minnkota customer service treats their customers when there is a problem and i hope this unit is defect free.I can not recomend their products to anyone because they seem to not understand or care that you cant fish for a month if the trolling motor fails.i can under stand insisting on a repair if the motor is a year or two old,but up to 6 months there should be free replacement. I wonder if they would have been as cavilier in there attitude had i been a big dollar pro fisherman and not a small time club tournament fisherman?"

Bad armature assemblies, July 6, 2007
By Dave from Melbourne, FL

"I ordered the 80-pound, foot control, freshwater bow mount with my new 18-foot bass boat in November 2006.

The good: I frequently fish thick grass (hydrilla and saw grass) and it chews threw cover with little difficultly. When fishing stump fields, the mount does an excellent job of breaking away to protect the shaft. Despite long days on the water, battery life is never an issue.

The bad: Two months after I bought the motor it started working intermittently, and then only on 50-percent or more power. I took it to my local Minn Kota service center, who diagnosed it with a bad armature assembly. Unfortunately, this wasn’t an isolated problem and the armature assembly was backordered. I checked with a trolling motor repairman I know in another part of the state and found out that Minn Kota had been having a high number of failures with this armature assembly.

The bad continued: The part came in after a six weeks and the motor was repaired. Although my experience with the service center was a good one, I remained frustrated at waiting for so long for the part. I sent an e-mail to Minn Kota, hoping that they’d at least extend the warranty for the time I couldn’t use the trolling motor, but all I could muster from Minn Kota was an apology.

In summary: Other than my experience with the armature assembly, it has been a good trolling motor. However, I would have expected Minn Kota to take a more active approach in addressing what was clearly a known issue—at least to Minn Kota service centers—with the armature assemblies. Minn Kota makes a good motor, but I think my next trolling motor will be a MotorGuide.

on the lake all the time, December 1, 2006
By scobbott from South Oklahoma

"I have my own lake - shallow and with a lot of grass. I have gotten myself stuck in the grass and in shallower water than I should have been in many times. I have ALWAYS been able to get out by simply giving the trolling motor full power and using the my brain a little. The Minn Kotas (I have 2 now) are very strong and weedless. Minn Kota is the best brand I have ever used."
