"I have one of the original versions of this cooler. I think it is 35 years old. It will last forever unless a latch breaks. We have used it on family picnics and it has been on dozens of wilderness canoe camping trips.
My favorite trick is to freeze a plastic gallon jug of spring water (with some water removed to allow for expansion). As the water melts, you have drinking water! It will last a weekend. I supplement it with some plastic ice packs also."

"My parents bought one of these steel coolers (in green) about 35 years ago, and we took it on camping trips and family vacations every year until my brother and I were grown and out on our own. My brother and I would then borrow the cooler from mom for our own family vacations.
After all these years, my mom (grandma) still brings the cooler with her when we have our annual family camping trip with our wives and all the kids. The original cooler is now dented, scratched and a little rusted in places, but it still holds ice like a champ. The latch has long been broken, and we have to stack firewood on top of it to keep critters out.
We got mom a brand new (green) one for Christmas, and she was a bit puzzled. She didn't know why she needed a new one since she still had the old one that still worked perfectly fine. We told her it was because of the broken latch on hers. She was reluctant at first, but seemed to warm up to the new one. We'll just have to wait till July to see if the old cooler or the new cooler shows up at the next camping trip!
All in all, my brother and I both love mom’s new cooler. We agree that it's just as solid as the original one was, and the latch does seem to be just as good as the original, (but honestly, we're working from memory on that one). My only wish is that Coleman would have kept the bottle opener in the side handle. It may not be a required item today, but it still would have been cool.

Great Cooler,September 4, 2007

"My husband and I had one of these coolers years ago. We were very glad to see that they finally brought it back. We purchased one and just used it over the Labor Day weekend. Had it sitting outside on our back porch, the temperature outside in the shade was 106, drinks stayed ice cold. In fact, it has been out there for 4 days with drinks in it and they are still ice cold, and there is still ice in it. The only bad thing is the latch is not as good as the original one. It does not lock as tight. But still a great cooler, we are going to buy a second one."

"I purchased my Steel-Belted cooler about 3 years ago, when it was reintroduced. I thought the price was to much-BUT it is well worth every cent. The cooler is used for every season, indoor and out. The durable steel and simple lines really make a great cooler. Keeps ice for days, longer if you limit the amount you open it. All my friends want one!"

"When I was kid my parents had one of these coolers that worked well for years and I was so pleased to see it brought back. I purchased mine two years ago, and I tell you what a difference vs. other coolers. I've been on 87 camping trips, so I know what a good cooler can do and the 54 QT Coleman Steel Cooler is a good one. I would change my ice in a traditional plastic cooler every day in hot weather, while the Coleman Steel Cooler could hold out for three days or more without a change in ice. Need I say more!"

"I been camping for ever and I'm 62 year old I had the old coleman ice chest and it work for me .I'm glad to see they brought it back .I haven't got one yet but if it better it worth the moeny.I was in yosemite about 35 year ago and a bear stood on top of the ice chest put his claws next to the latch and pull it open ate ever thing but the can cola. I bent the top back and used it year after.Ever time I look at it brought back memory.And about the ice if they use block ice it will last a lot longer they can put other ice on top. good move coleman. mondo"

"I have used this cooler for over 3 years or when ever it was re-introduced. Its been camping in Colorado, up Pike's Peak, to the drag races in Dallas, and the family trips to Ohio, all in the back of my pick up. It looks just as new now as it did then. Although its never been tipped over, the locking lid did keep out the racoons at a state park in texas. I too thought that the ice did not last as long as stated. About 2 days at best in the hotter weather. I used crushed or cubed ice instead of dry ice as I like lots of ice for drinks. Still like it,still use it, would recommend to any one that asked"

"I was excited when I finally heard this cooler was being made again. As a camper all my life I remember these as being the best you could find. Well much to my surprise after buying it and using it for a couple of seasons I was very dissappointed with it.It did not keep ice longer than 2 days and the latch did not lock securely"
