Good for the money, August 20, 2009
By Iwanna50pounder from CT

Advantages: Value for money
Disadvantages: Durability

"These are a pretty good pair of pliers for the money, i bought them at bass pro on a special weekend sale, and they interested me because they had similar features of the van staal pliers for a much more affordable price. However, they will begin to stain within two trips/ contact with saltwater, but they deserve three starts becuase the cutter, sheath, and tether are nice."

Fair quality at best, August 16, 2009
By matchet

Disadvantages: Appearance, Durability, rust quickly

"Piers work well - just not around water. Rust bad and I just fish brackish waters and even tried taking care of them and wiping down after each use. Smartest thing I did with these pliers, is bought them when they were 1/2 off."

Awesome pliers for the money, period, July 8, 2009
By Slata from the Nasty Northeast

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Value for money
Disadvantages: sheath & belt clip

"Pros:
My pair gets used mostly in the surf. And for the money, these are a no brainer. Good build & the cutter is sharp as ever. They look pretty durable & have a good "weight" & feel to them in your hand. Unhooking stripers or blues is a breeze. I try to do a quick 5 sec rinse of freshwater every outing or 2.

Cons:
The sheath is annoying. The flap that velcros over the pliers sometimes gets tucked in while putting the pliers back in...youll see what I mean once you try it. It can be easily fixed by 1. not using the flap. Or 2. Buy another sheath. The clip that attaches to your wading belt is also suspect.
I've also noticed a little bit of rust in places...but was able to wipe it off no prob.

Do yourself a favor & spray it down with wd40 once or twice/mo...dont wipe it off...let it soak in. I've got a feeling these should last yrs to come.

A great tool, at a good price!, July 4, 2009
By FishON from Cleveland, OH

Advantages: Performs well, Quality, Value for money

"The first time I saw these pliers was about a year ago, on a fishing charter off the Florida Keys- a deckhand was using them for tightening a good-sized loose bolt.

Weeks back I noticed these same pliers on sale here at Bass Pro, and picked up a pair along with some replacement blades (just in case they didn't hold up well). After a good amount of use, I am quite impressed with the quality- they're tough, well made, feel good in the hand, and have had no problems whatsoever with the cutters- used them to cut braid from 20 lb. test for bass to 60 lb. for big cats, LIKE BUTTER and still sharp!

Don't get me wrong, they're not Van Staals, but for the price, any serious angler with an eye to the affordable would be hard pressed to find better.

Don't like the Sheath, June 9, 2009
By MDCC from Maine

Advantages: Value for money
Disadvantages: poorly designed sheath

"I loved the pliers until I lost the pliers, sheath and lanyard. Pliers are great. Sheath has a metal buckle and no way to run a belt thru a loop. So if the metal buckle works it's way off your surfcasting belt, goodby pliers. So that's what happened to me at the Cape Cod Canal this past weekend. If you have an aftermarket leather sheath with a belt loop, go ahead and use it with the pliers. But throw away the useless sheath Browing has."

Great Pliers!, May 13, 2009
By MttSnook from Orlando, Florida

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Style/Design, Value for money

"Pliers worked flawlessly. The cut braid better than any pliers I have used yet. Had them for about a year and a half now and they still work perfectly, even with salt water and I almost never rinse them off. The only thing I would do different is get the longer ones.

And when they go on sale buy 2 or 3 pairs!!!

Great pliers, December 15, 2008
By shootisttx from SE Texas

"These pliers are of really good quality. I did have to adjust the cutters a little in order to get the jaws to close completely, and the lanyard is really not up to the job of securing the weight of the pliers to the holster, thus keeping this from being a 5 star review. Otherwise, great piece of equipment.

You may be able to find lighter pliers, but nothing within $100 dollars of these will have the quality.

Browning pliers & sheath, September 1, 2008
By Slim2n1 from East Central Florida

"So far these have turned out to be very useful and have held up well. I like the fact that they are very rigid so that when you have a hook in a very tough place the plier does not twist under pressure. They have shown some very small areas of corrosion, but I treat them accordingly and wash them in fresh water, dry, then lubricate with a silicone spray. I use these mostly when fishing in the surf or from the jetty. The sheath has a nice long metal clip that attaches to the pocket in my trunks quite well. The lanyard helps to ensure that I don't lose them and is situated so that it doesn't get in the way. Overall I am happy with this product."

Mixture good/bad, August 15, 2008
By nhirsch from Florida

"I have had 3 of these pliers after buying them when they were on sale at BassPro, I gave one to a friend. There is good and bad with them and note I use them in salt water exclusively (Florida). Sure they are heavy but others have spoken about that, the plus and minus. Here are my comments:
The first pair I started using showed little corrosion except for the cutters which after awhile, one cutter chipped and later broke likely from corrosion and broke the very small screw holding one side. I think the dissimilar metal of the cutter where it meets the plier is the problem in salt water. The clips on the lanyard and the back belt clip on the sheath also will corrode/rust. I was happy to receive back a replacement pair.
The side cutter on these pliers I use frequently because it is perfect for opening up the ring on the hook in order to make double hook and triple hook rigs. Just put it up where the ring meets the hook shaft and squeeze and viola it opens it up very easily and just enough to slide the second point/barb thru it. The angle of the cutter seems to open each sized hook from 2/0 thru 6/0 perfectly. Then the heavy duty plier jaws close the ring easily and the grooves in the jaws hold the ring perfectly like it was designed for it.
Unfortunately the second pair also had the same problem as the first, with one cutter breaking off and breaking the screw. I was taking them back to sent them back again but stopped to roll up my neighbor's boat hose and kerplunk, the second pair slipped out of the holster into the water. I went snorkeling for it but didn't find it a few days later. The heaviness of the pliers likely sunk into the mud. If the plier keeper was a little better designed, this wouldn't have happened because as it is, I don't use it but would if it were better designed.
The small velcro keeper is sewed way down inside just gets in the way when you put the pliers back and the person who wrote he cut it off has a good idea. The best design should have it sewed it above and out of the way. It does hold it sungly if you want to take the time to dig down with your finger to pull out the keeper and then affix it.
The third pair hasn't spent much time on the boat but given the above experience, i'll be sure to wash it off frequently and also maybe take out, lubricate, and put back the screws holding the cutters to avoid the problems experienced.
I'd actually buy more of these if they go on sale again and maybe even get the newer longnose model. The price even at list is better than many of the other too-highly priced pliers. I also have a titanium and the older stainless steel model of the Donnmar more expensive pliers but use these Browning more due to the side cutter. The stainless Donnmar I had also broke off the cutter and I replaced it but the new cutter isn't cut the same so I can't grip anything thin with the jaws now of the older Donnmar. I noticed there are two screws holding the cutters on the Donnmar titanium but they cost more than $150 more than the Browning.
In summary, if you get these pliers and use them in salt water, wash them off and maybe do some preventative maintenance on them if you want the cutters to last.
My rating takes into account all of above plus my willingness to buy more.

Nice!, July 21, 2008
By lemonhead from Florida

"Well....they work...pretty darn good. I'm glad I spent the money on them and thus far they have been a great set of pliers. The cutter works on braid, mono, and wire. Yes, sometimes on braid you have to squeeze a little tighter than you would like to but they get the job done while having no problems cutting braided cable or solid wire for the toothy critter rigging. The sheath and lanyard compliment them well and should last as long as the pliers. I do have some gripes about them but they are trivial. The hold down strap on the sheath gets in the way when you go to put the pliers back in so I cut it out, problem solved. Another slight grip I have with them is the cast metal jaws wont grip wire tightly due to the dimpling design they cast into the jaw face but still have more than enough grip to manipulate hooks and other assorted needs. Lastly after every trip I've made with them I do notice surface rust on them but nothing that doesn't wipe of. So for $50 you get a good set of pliers without having to take out a mortgage like some of the others. To those who want to get a fancy pair of functional pliers these will fit the bill."

great pliers, July 5, 2008
By Flbonefisher from south Florida

"Previous reviewers have noted the weight of the pliers. Sure they're not made of ultra-light materials but the don't need to be. How many times will you take out these pliers and say "wow, these are to heavy too use for the next 20 seconds. I need pliers so light they float." The pliers are made of quality materials, they are very durable and reliable and work very well. if you want to obsess over weight than find another pair. Realistically these pliers perform better than any angler could ever need. Saltwater is no obstacle for these pliers."

EXPECTING MORE, March 7, 2008
By MAC67 from Northeast

"I was expecting a lot more than what I got. Maybe a bad pair, maybe not. But like the previous reviewer my needlenose version do not close all the way. Cutters work great. I felt the over feel was "ok" but on the heavy side. You be the judge. To me they were just another pair if 'pliers"............."

WHAT A BANG FOR THE BUCK, December 26, 2007
By Captrob79 from Cape May, NJ

"I purchased these pliers about three years ago and since that time they don't leave my side while on the boat. They have with stood the riggers of fishing inshore and offshore off the coast of New Jersey . I fish at least three or more times a week so they get used quite regularly."

Product Proven, November 25, 2007
By USFBULL from Tampa Bay

"The other day I was fishing in Tampa Bay with some visiting relatives and I’ve had my pliers for about 4 months now. My uncle who was used to fishing for trout in North Carolina was not accustomed to treble hooks and Spanish Mackerel. Long story short, he was hooked deep with three hooks. I cut all six hooks off my lure with these pliers and was later still able to cut braided line. I am very impressed with these pliers, I would recommend these pliers for anyone."

so so, October 17, 2007
By bing! from socal

"these are a well constructed pair of pliers. could be better designed. the heft is impressive, but the weight and the lack of spring loading makes them a little hard to use on little things like cinching a knot. For taking hooks off fish, they are great. The finish has taken on some rust staining but no flaking or crusting. I hope it stops there. I fish in saltwater on a kayak so this things gets drenched every now and then.

why a 3? there is nothing else on the market for 29 bucks close to it. my rapalas have all rusted under the rubber handles. will try the calcuttas next if ever.
