"I've been trying to kill this motor for over a year now and it won't die! I can't wait to get the new wireless Motorguide but until then this is one tough trolling motor."

Best on the Market, May 22, 2008
By SimplyFishing from Chicago, IL

"I have used both Mototguide and Minn Kota and I prefer Motorguide hands down. Runs great, doesnt drain the battery and rolls nicely through weeds. I can use this all day with minimal hangups. Allows me to cover a lot of water fast."

5 times in shop in one year, May 6, 2008
By BDilling

"When it works it is nice. In one year on a Fla river it has failed 5 times. I have had to ship it from St. Pete to Lakeland for repair and even though Mercury was called and they said they would reimburse the shipping, they have not done so. If a weed wraps around the prop, the unit fails. I don't know if I have the cursed one but if I had a choice I would buy the Minn Kota that my fishing buddy on the river has as it seems to handle weeds and grass w/o the problems."

Things to keep in mind when buying a boat, April 6, 2008
By ShakeAndBakeFishing from Oklahoma

"I bought my first boat last summer and this trolling motor was installed on it. I was happy to be a first time boat owner but a little annoyed once I put the boat on the water.
I bought a Tahoe Q4 F/S w/Merc 150 OB and love it very much. We fish, tube, and ski, and cruise.

The 54lb thrust motor has plenty of thrust and battery life for this application on a 12V system.

The only thing I would've have done different was get one with a foot control. Very annoying to have to cast, retrieve, adjust motor, retrieve, etc (especially in high winds).

Pros: I was out at Lake Fork with some serous winds and I severely bent the shaft - we were able to "persuade" it back into line and it is straight again. Awesome construction quality. It was beat up on stumps and logs but held through.

Con: The handle had to be adjusted three times because the hardware is not sufficient for any continuous use. I had to fix a loose fitting and had the handle pull out threee times and lost the hardware in the lake when reaching for the handle once. I recommend pre-flighting the hardware before use and carrying extra hardware.

Con: Handle opeation is annoying - buy foot mount and keep hand unit in the truck for a back up unit.

Overall: Great unit but I would have went the extra mile (and dollar) to get a more user friendly trolling motor.

Great trolling motor!, March 11, 2008
By fishfan from IL

"I'm currently using the FW54HB on my fish/ski combo. It is an 18' deep V all fiberglass hull that's fairly heavy, and I have to say that I am absolutely impressed with this motor.

First of all, I was worried that 54# of thrust would not be enough for my boat, then add in the fact that it is only a 12 volt motor. Well I'm happy to say that my worries were unfounded! This motor provides more than enough power to move my boat, even on a windy day with a pretty good chop.

Another thing that I'm incredibly happy with is the run time from a single 12 volt deep cycle battery. I can get a full day of fishing in without the battery going dead on me. I was also surprised by how quiet and weed free this motor is. I certainly wasn't expecting that from the 12 volt version.

I had to go with the hand control motor, since the bow space that I have is to limited for a foot control. This is the only thing that I wish I could change about my set-up, but at least the motor's hand control is very easy to use. It has a nice smooth feel in the speed and direction change controls.

Along with all these great features come the Gator Mount. This is one of the nicest mounts available. It is incredibly easy to deploy, and it makes height adjustments and motor removal a snap!

If you're limited to a bow mounted hand control motor, then this motor will not disappoint you. If I could give this 6 or 10 stars, I would. I can not say enough good things about this motor!
