Doesn't get any better than Ugly Stick

,
May 10, 2011

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Value for money, Quality, reliability
"I've been using Ugly Stick rods ever since my mother has been using them and I have NEVER used another rod. Don't need to. Ugly Stick rods are so tough, I have a heavy action one that I use for catfish fishing, and that coupled with 40lb spiderwire, I have pulled an entire tree stump up out of a lake. I've never broken one and the only reason i've needed to replace one is because my brother stepped on the eye of one of my rods and broke the ceramic ring inside.
This is a good quality rod that is well worth the money and the light action one I just bought is proving to be sensitive enough to feel those timid bluegill and crappie bites that I need without being too powerful to snatch them out of the water. A GREAT rod."

Just can't beat an Ugly Stik!

,
August 23, 2006

"I'm amazed by people that go out and buy $200 rods. Heck, I'm amazed that someone would even spend $100 on a rod! Most rods have one thing in common: They catch fish. The Ugly Stik does just that, and BIG fish! A lot of people I know have this rod, but one of my friends, who doesn't care about the price of his rod, has a lot of Ugly Stiks. His rods get thrown around, fall on the ground, and have been attacked by Bullheads with attitudes! Some of his rods broke after a while, but his Ugly Stik just bounced back. The point of this little story: they're tough!
When you're fed up with your $100 rod, pick out an Ugly Stik or an Ugly Stik Lite. They're great rods, and they catch fish."

"I've been using Ugly Stiks for 22 years.I have 6 Stiks-3 ultras,1 med.heavy,1 bait casting all 1 piece and a 2 piece ocean stik. Two stiks I've had for 22 years and still catching fish. I just bought my 7 year old son (Ryder) his 1st ugly stik.In 4 days of fishing we caught over 300 fish all on Ugly Stiks, The action and the feel of the rod is the BEST. I wouldn't own anything but a Ugly Stik."

GREAT Value

Disadvantages: a little heavy
"I have always had an ugly stik or two as backups. I have had several rods over a $100 fail on me but have never had an ugly stik fail. I still prefer the feel of a higher end stick but if you want something that will take a beating and still hold up the stik is the way to go. The low price makes this the best value in it's price range."

Most versatile, durable rod ever made

Advantages: Performs well, Value for money, Quality
"This is a terrific quality rod, especially for the price. I have the 6'0" 1102 model. It has caught me various species of bass, catfish and panfish. I have used and abused this rod, which is typically stored in the bed of my truck as I travel along rough roads. My only complaint is the design of the reel lock: the part of the handle that turns to lock the reel onto the reel seat. Because the turning causes the handle to expand, this thin plactic piece will eventually crack, which is easy to fix with a zip tie or two. Still, I wish Shakespeare would replace this part with the more traditional aluminum reel seats it uses on many other models of its Ugly rods."

"Every now and then I consider "upgrading" to more expensive gear; usually the thought comes to me during the long, Winter months while I'm waiting for ice out and dreaming of being out on the water. I always wind up coming back to the fact that I can't fault what works, and year after year it's been my Ugly Stiks. Coupled with Shimano Sienna reels, it's a $60 setup that has boated me everything from panfish, pickerel and bass locally to Walleye and Northern Pike on a yearly trip to Canada, as big as this 36" Pike last year."

"Have been looking for 8 to 9 ft rod to bass fish. Mostly crankbait and top water. Did not want to pay $100 to $200 for a steelhead rod. Found the ugly stick and used it last weekend. Like the action. Wish the handle was thinner and lighter but for the price cannot complain. Plan to use it on the coast for inshore trout and redfish also. Not my all purpose rod but will use it for special applications."

"I bought two of these to start with I now have 4. They have a very good feel and are very well made and the cost is very resonable. I wish I could tell you how well they hold up in the long run but only time will tell, but for the money you can't go wrong."

"This ultra lite fishing rod is great. These rods don't break like the IM6 rods when you pull a fish out of the water. The grips are far superior to the cork grips which always wear out quickly. A great rod for the money and will last you for years."

The Ugly Stik is a Beautiful Value

"The Ugly Stik, is a go to rod. I grew up using it and they still make them today. That's 20 years since my first ugly stik to today. There are lighter rods out there, there are rods that are prettier (The name tells you how it looks) but for a rod that is a grab and go, you can't beat it, or the value. Its a great rod, that if something does happen, you aren't out a major investment.
This rod is great for kids, and dads with kids. simply because of the bang for your buck. Unless there is a fire sale on other rods I'm sticking with my ugly stiks."

Best rods ever

"I have been bass fishing for over 25 years, and during that time, have been able to try alot of different rods from various manufacturers, including several trendy one piece graphite rods. After breaking them all ( rods snapped at the tips ) I was becoming really frustrated. A fishing buddy suggested that I try an UGLY STIK. Once I did, I have never used another brand, and probably never will again. They are some of the toughest and strongest rods on the market. In fact, under normal fishing conditions, I dare you to try and break one. You might eventually succeed, but I'm betting you'll be exausted. At around $30 each, they are very reasonably priced. Some folks question the sensativity on these rods, but this has never been an issue with me. I seem to feel every nibble and bite, just fine. A matter of preference, I guess. My choice in these rods is the one piece, 6' MH. It has handled everything I have ever caught flawlessly, including a 9 lb. bass out of Lake Okeechobee in Florida. I have 4 UGLY STIKS, and my son has 4. Waiting for Shakesphere to make a 7' one piece rod. I'll buy several. If you're looking for a new rod ( and one that will last probably 25 years at least ) get yourself an UGLY STIK or two. I don't think you'll be dissapointed."

Just what I was looking for

"I bought the SPL1100, which is the 9 foot 2-piece medium action spinner. I was looking for a lighter weight, long rod for striper fishing from the bank below my local dam. I had used heavier rods and my arm was about to fall off after an hour of retrieving swim baits or Rattle Traps. This rod is light, whippy enough and long enough that I get 75 yds on average throwing the 5/8 oz Berkley Swim Shad and plenty strong enough to handle big striped bass. I have it paired with the Daiwa SS Tournament 2600 reel and 20 lb braid. Move up to 1 ounce jigheads and you might get 100 yds."
