Heddon Heddon® Crazy Crawler® Lures

Put into motion, it's easy to see how the Heddon Crazy Crawler got its name. Designed with two free-swinging metal wings that flap as they catch the water's surface, creating a half-swimming, half-crawling major disturbance. Fish see and strike the Crazy Crawler as an injured bird. The Crazy Crawler is effective at night. #2 hooks.

Spain fishing

"While in the Army and stationed in Germany, I went to Spain to go bass fishing, which were brought over at the end of World War 2 buy an Air Force Commander. When we showed up to get our boats, everybody on the dock was laughing at me when they saw the Bullfrog colored Crazy Crawler. During the 4 days we got to fish, I was the only person to bring in a stringer limit every day which averaged about 4 pounds a piece. This was the only lure I used, and threw it at every stick up I could find and never missed catching a bass, I even took the thing off and let the other guy in the boat use the plug and that was the only fish he caught the entire 4 days. At the end of the fishing trip, everyone wanted to know what the name of the plug was and where I had gotten it at. I have used this plug everywhere and have caught bass, the two biggest smallmouth I have caught was on this lure in the middle of the day. I just went fishing with a friend this week and after three cast he was changing to his crawler because the score was 3 to nothing. This is an outstanding lure and I have it in every color for both sizes. It works day or night, the bass just love it, and I have caught a lot of big Bluegill on the lure also, even on the bigger plug."

Disadvantages: Durability
"this lure is good but also at the same time it is not so great, when they were first made and they were made of wood and other materials that could handle the weather they were great.
but now these new ones are only made up of plastic and don't hold up well i had bout 2 since the first one i thought i just got one that was a defalt, but i was sadly mistaken, eathier the wings broke off and or didn't even open.
but that might just be my luck.

Crazy Crawler

Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design, Performs well, Value for money, Quality, you can feel it working without seeing it.
"I love to fish at night and the best time is when you can't see your hand in front of you. This is the time when those largemouth bass are feeding, especially in the summer. I have caught more bass on the Crazy Crawler than any other lure. My favorite color is the one above. One night me and a friend were wadding a streatch of water and I had my Crazy Crawler and he had a jitterbug. We were beside each other and I caught 5 smallmouth bass all over 15in. and he caught only rock bass or red eyes. His jitterbug was the same color as my crazy crawler. The next night he bought a crazy crawler and we had a ball..."

Excellent, overlooked lure!

"My girlfriends father suggested that I buy one of these as he's had one in his tackle box for years. I bought the Black Frog type and I'm very happy! The Black Frog color glows in the dark so I heard it was great for night time use. I just received it in the mail today and took it out.
When the sun started to set I decided to put it on my line, and it wasn't long before I had a nice bass on the end of my line! I love how it moves in the water and gets attention from all kinds of fish. Unfortunately I had to leave earlier than I wanted, but having gotten a strike that fast and a bass that nice, I can't wait to take it back out!!
And the ONLY problem I had with this is that one of the wings would stick occasionally, but a good pull/tug on the line set it straight to reel back in normally, so it's only a very minor inconvenience."

"This lure is one of the best lures I have ever used. It swims great and brings all the big fish to the top again and again. I caught many bass and big crappie on this lure. It is easy to use and doesn't get snagged very easily. I would recommend this to all top water fisherman out there. So make this your have to have lure in your tackle box."

"This was one of those baits that just hung around the tackle box because it filled the slot nicely. When going over some old tackle with a friend we decided on a lunch bet with some old style lures. This little thing held it's own and got me a nice sit down lunch. I've purchased some of the new ones and they work just as well. The best time I've found for them is early AM classic bass fishing around cover. The hits will knock this plug right up in the air."

"This is an interesting lure, but hasn't performed well, at least for me. Causes some line spin and sometimes does do anything at all. I would prefer the Heddon Tiny Torpedo instead."

Crazy Crawler is NUTS

"Twenty years ago, when Purtis Creek first opened, the fish were just soooo ignorant they would hit most any lure. So a buddy and me started coming up with the most off-the-wall lures we could, to see if the fish would jump on 'em. Well, one day he shows up with the Crawler. Of course I laughed at him. No self-respecting fish would eat that ridiculous bait. Second cast - he's latched onto a 4 pounder. I've been carrying the Crawler ever since. I was fishing a pond yesterday that has a good population of red wing blackbirds living in the cattails around the bank. My Crawler is painted like one of those birds. Guess what? Yup, they tore it up. Get one...it's a gas."

"I'm not really sure what its supposed to appear as to the fish. It just works. Haven't had much luck with bass but for being small, it drives northerns CRAZY! I have A few different color patterns including one with a black and gold body with a white head. it had a problem with one of the blades sticking and not working properly because of it. but like any bait some modifying was needed. there's a little hump from the molding right under where metal wraps around to be attached. A little carving and it was ready. your tackle box is far from complete without one of these classics."

"I have used this lure ever since I was a kid. I think that it is the most fun surfacebait I have ever fished. I always let it sit after I cast it out, and then start and stop it. Bass hit it after it stops."

First Bass Caught on a Crazy Crawler

,
August 29, 2008
By homemikey
from New Jersey
"I loved fishing when I was a kid, but only caught Perch, Sunny and Crappie—I was a kid, and didn't really know what I was doing... probably just as well. Until last year, I hadn't touched a fishing pole in decades. I decided to take my daughters fishing.
Well, it was last August, a really cold/rainy day, and we were fishing from the dock when I hooked a HUGH bass. Well, he broke my line and took my spinner, but from that moment, I was "hooked" again as well.
Fast forward to last week, and we're on vacation as Sheltered Lakes, a small private lake in the Adirondacks. I was out in a rowboat with my oldest daughter of 7. The fish probably see every lure known to man, so I wasn't catching anything on cranks/softs/etc. It was getting past dusk—the sky was still dark blue, but the shore and the tree-line were lost in blackness. I changed lures to my old crazy crawler in flourescent green craw (Honeslty, I don't think color matters much at night), and cast far towards the shoreline. It hit the water a few feet out, and I only paused it a half-second before I started the gurgling retrieve, when a swift tug pulled the crawler under the surface. I tugged to set the hook (more of a reaction than a conscious effort) and the fight was on. After a few seconds, he jumped from the water in an attempt to throw the hook—I couldn't see him, but I heard the splash, felt the line and saw the white bubbles against the pitch blackness of the surface.
He fought hard, going deep, then charging the boat to get some slack. I reeled faster to keep pressure on him—I wasn't worried about breaking him off, since I was using braided line (Braided for topwater?!?!?!?—hey, the rules are, there are no rules). Before he could get under the boat and tangled in my anchor line, I wrested him to the surface, unhooked him, and lifted him to show my daughter (Sorry—I forgot my camera.. but, I have a witness!). My first bass... thanks to my crazy crawler.
So there you have it—for me, this lure now has legendary status. In fact, I'm planning on picking up a few more. I suggest you do the same. Fish it fast or slow, with a pause or start the retrieve as soon as it hits the water. Don't take anything anyone says as law—just fish how you want. Try something new. You may stumble across something never done before that catches fish.
Good luck!
