Rod Holder Clamp

,

By Thun
"I love Cannon Downriggers but the clamp that holds the rod holder to the downrigger in the accessory pack does not securely hold the rod holder to the Mini Troll. The clamp is closed around the rod holder with two tiny screws that popped out when I tried to secure the unit. It seems to me that this problem is easily solved if holes were drilled completely through the clamps and secured with nuts and bolts. I had to buy bigger screws and use plastic ties to secure these clamps."

Problematic Waste of Money

Advantages: absolutely none
Disadvantages: Difficult to use, Performance, design flaw with depth counter
"I got this downrigger as a (requested) christmas gift from my girlfriend. I needed something that I could use to get my lure/bait down to 35'-50' deep on the river where I often fish. However, it didn't come with a weight or release so I finally got around to ordering those. Actually, I ended up ordering the accessory pack for this unit which includes both those items plus a rold holder which mounts directly to the side of the downrigger. Although I didn't directly pay for the downrigger itself, the overall cost was $135 +s/h and the unit does have what I consider to be major drawbacks. The max weight you are allowed to use with this downrigger is 4lbs. However, even at the slowest speed which I could idle with my 15hp outboard, the weight was penduluming up what I would estimate to be 8-10 feet. As a result I really never did know what my depth was. Additionally, as one other reviewer wrote, the depth counter doesn't work properly and constantly needs fussed with in order to try and keep it "accurate." The counter relies on the weight of the ball in order to track depth but no matter what speed I lower or raise the weight, the depth I lower it doesn't equal the depth I raise it. Basically, if I start at a depth of zero and lower the weight down to 40 feet and then retrieve it back to the boat, the depth counter might read 10 feet or -10 feet instead of returning to zero again like it should. To fix this problem (every time I retrieve) I either have to release or reel in cable while the counter is not under tension so that the depth counter won't record the change. Needless to say, that is a major pain in the butt and the main reason I will not order another one of these and could not recommend it to you for purchase. .
Also worth noting is the rod holder which comes with the accessory kit for this model. It does not have long enough screws to actually mount it to the downrigger. It was a simple enough matter for me to dig through my collection of screws to find a few that worked, but I should not have had to.
Just look elsewhere for your downrigger needs. If I had to do it again I would buy the Canon Lake-Troll unit for $150, find a way to mount if on my 16' aluminum boat and hope that the depth counter functions better (though it looks to be the same design even on Canon's $400 downriggers). At the very least, that downrigger has a more compact, easier to use design (with the spool being vertical), supports double the weight, includes the rod holder and is only $15 more. Though you will still need to buy the weight, if you are like me finding a 6lb or heavier weight is something I could have gotten locally. As it was I could not find a 4lb weight and had to order it and pay s/h."

Terrible Product

Disadvantages: Durability
"The reel is plastic and I broke the handle off the first time out on the lake. It is very difficult to find a replacement reel that doesn't cost more than the whole unit."

Excellent value

Advantages: Design, Durability, Value for money
Disadvantages: can't reset the depth counter.
"Bought the mini troll to see if I would like downrigger fishing without spending a lot of money. First time we used this product we caught 3 nice rainbows fishing at a depth I could never get a lure to. Adds a new dimension to fishing. I plan on buying a second mini troll. I use it on a 16' Grumman Bass Boat. Clamps onto the gunwale or onto the side. Only negative, you can't reset the depth counter. After the first use it no longer is on 0 and we maunally count the turns of the handle to get to the desired depth. Otherwise I would have given it a 5."

"it worked fine except the knob (and some other parts) fell off because i loosened the knob too much. it would be much better if the knob brake was replaced with a lever type brake (even if it added $10."
