Maxima Leader Diameter vs. Lb Test

,
March 31, 2011
By Orly
from Mishawaka, Ind
Advantages: Performs well, Quality, proven leader line, old timers swear by maxima
Disadvantages: too stiff when a soft leader is needed
"Several years ago, a major fly fishing magazine tested leader lines by knot strength, lb breaking weight, diameter, etc. Maxima consistently tested stronger than rated on label because it measured a larger diameter than printed on label. Listed 6lb was actually 8lb, listed 8lb was actually 10lb, etc. In other words, they under-rate the line strength and diameter. Go one size down in Maxima to match other leader brands to equal aprox lb test.
Maxima is the leader material of choice with a fluorocarbon tippet for most steelhead and salmon anglers in the Great Lakes Region.

Best Fishing Line there is!

,
November 12, 2010
By WhiteLightningSteve
from San Diego
Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality
"I have once again confirmed that Maxima Fishing Line is the best monofiliment fishing line available. I was unable to get it locally here in the San Diego area and was forced to settle for an alternate product. Needless to say the alternate product didn't live up to it's hype. It broke regularly, it didn't meet it's advertised weight requirements and cost me a number of nice dish the very first time I used it. Upon finding that the Bass Pro Shops still carried it, I promptly stripped all of the other product off of the 4 reels I had put it on, 2 of which hadn't even seen the water yet, and ordered enough new Maxima to fill those four reels back up. The day following receipt of the new Maxima line, I went fishing again with the new line wound on the reels and caught some of the nicest fish I have caught all year long. It casts nicely, to me is almost invisible in the water and most importantly, didn't break while catching fish at or larger than it's rated line strength. I will never again use any fishing line other than Maxima no matter how long it takes to find it!
Thank you Bass Pro Shops for recognizing that Maxima is a line prefered by serious fishermen!

Good, but not as good as cameleoon color

,
November 8, 2010
By hammy32
Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality
Disadvantages: Appearance, wll find the cameleon line if bp doesn't carry it.
"Green color stood out a little more than the cameleon line color I'm used to. The cameleon is a superior color when used in tanic stained water. Line performed well, was strong and no surprise "break-offs". Didn't carry the cameleon when I ordered, so went for the green which will be an excellent line for non-tanic colored water. Very little line memory and a good line overall. Went on my spinning reels without any line twist which is bothersome with some lines."

Rigid but strong line

,
May 18, 2010
By NocturnalHunter
from Syracuse, NY
Advantages: Quality
Disadvantages: Performance
"This line is not as soft as I expected. I read a lot of reviews before making the purchase. Everybody said it was a soft line. Now I have used it, I think it is a relatively rigid line. The line is very strong on the plus side. This line is labeled as the same thickness as the Trelene Smooth Casting (both rated 8lb.). But this line is much thicker than Trelene. I do not know who is wrong here. I would guess this line's diameter is labeled wrong.
I still recommend this line but not strongly."

Love this line

"I got hooked on Maxima 10 yrs ago. I use th 4 lb for crappie and the 6 and 8 for most spinning rods. For heavy cover I go to 10 lb and the line works great.
I fish primarily spinning rods and I get less tangles and when I do they come out easier with this line than others.
Last year I got back into Trilene XL on the advice of a friend. After breaking off way too many fish last season I gave him all the Trilene I had bought."

"I have used this line for a couple years now and will never use another mono as long as I can get my hands on this. I have tried my friends choice of other lines from braid to fluorocarbon and have not found anything to compare with the strength of Maxima Chameleon line. I have used 6, 12 and am now using 18 pound test. With 12 pound test I have never worried about landing a fish. It is very strong and abrasion resistant. I fish for tiger muskies and am trying the 18 pound just for added confidence as I have purchased some expensive musky lures and I do not want to lose any trophies.
I would recommend this line to anyone over braid or fluoro."

Soft & Limp

"This is my #1 line for river fishing Salmon & Steelhead. It's super soft and easy to work with, I can cast it "A Country Mile" super strong to, I've snagged huge branches and dragged them in no problem. The Ultragreen is as close as you can get to invisible underwater."

"I have tried countless numbers of line looking for all out performance and my search stopped here! This line casts farther, holds stronger, and knots up less than any other line. I use this on all my trout spinning combos and used to catch these fish."

Maxima Line

"Premium tuff, higher quality line.
Wouldn't hesitate to spool 8 lb. test on a spinning reel.
High abrasion resistance, strong, and as good as it gets.
Good for jigging in rocks.
Would like to use 8# for channel cat. Haven't done so yet.
I know guides who use it for lake trout and walleye. ><>

Ultragreen

,
September 18, 2007
By cliffjumper
from Vancouver Island B.C.
"I have used 4# as leader material on flylines and UL rigs, and 6# on small 15-size spinning reels for 30 years with great satisfaction and confidence.
I also in the past 10 years used 12, 15, 20 and 30# lines.
The 4# is invisible in the water, spinning is excellent, flexible for use with flies, and about average for good 4# mono-strength.
Similarly, 6#, 12# & 15# cannot be easily seen in all but the most clear of water, and in their line class, a premium line.
Noteably in 20#, float fishing in the river, I tail-hooked a chrome bright 38# Chinook salmon which took me on the wildest ride I've ever had, around submerged trees, branches and rocks, under the boat and back, around the motor and up & down the river through some of the strongest current it could find. I was hopping!
I should never have landed that fish... but the line hung in there and gave me the fish of the year. (My Shimano rod & reel didn't hurt things either.)
My other line-tests are similarly good. Diameter is below average, strength above average. Flexibility is soft enough for spinning reels to 15# test. (I've not tried spinning 20#). On baitcasting reels, it is excellent to 30#, which I use on mooching and surf-casting reels.
That salmon is testimony to abrasion resistance, knot strength and low visibility in the water.
My only demerit is twofold: I now like some of the new soft, thinner lines in the higher tests on spinning reels better, and as I now have eyesight which prefers hi-viz lines, I'm about to try flouro-pink Maxima 15# & 20# and use ultragreen as leader... we'll see...
I am comfortable saying this is easily a go-to, first choice line for most fishers.
Cheers!"

I caught a 17 lb Largemouth on Maxima

,
April 3, 2006
By Big Bass Hunter
from San Diego, Ca
"I caught the unoffical Arizona State record Largemouth Bass in 1999. The Bass weighed 17.6lb. It was weighed twice, pictures were taken and it was relesed to fight another day. I caught the Bass on 8lb Maxima Ultragreen. The fight lasted approx 20 min with several runs into brush piles. The Bass was later determined to be an original Florida Strain Largemouth planted in the 70's in the Lower Colorado River near Yuma AZ. I have taken 5 Bass over 10lbs and wont trust any other line for strenght."

Maxima Fishing Line

"Line is very sensitive for mono. Chameleon is my color of choice, and it seemed to disapear even in clear water!! It was a great experience, but the line seemed a little stiff, and I would probably not recommend this for spinning reels. Happy Fishing to all!!"
