hated it!!,

Disadvantages: Durability, Performance
"Bought a BG-15 mostly on these reviews. Worked a couple of times, then had to send it back. When I got it back the little button on the drag faced popped out, and when I spooled it with braided line, the line would wrap around the little button on the drag face, if I didn't check it every time. What a mess if I didn't notice it or had to retrieve in a hurry. Would never buy another one. I'm going back to Penn."

Best Reel On The Market!!,
March 7, 2009
"This reel is the best reel i have used. I have a bg30 with 30lb. suffix and i recently used it for some skoolies and had no problem bringing them in. Ive brought in a barracuda that was about 50lbs. I have it sitting on a 30-80lb. ugly stic, and for me this is the best combo I've used. i recommended it to a few friends and now they are all using bg30s. I've used this reel for everything. Ive been using this reel on my downrigger and it has amazing. i recommend this to everyone."

Great reels,

"I've got a BG15, BG30, and BG90. I've had great results with all of them. I even caught my largest kingfish to date (35 lbs) on the BG15 and it worked great. The gear ratio of the BG15 is also perfect for topwater in my opinion. The BG30 is perfectly matched up for spoon fishing, as well as jigging. I regularly catch Grouper and Snapper on the BG30 and BG90 and the gear ratio and durability in all of them can't be matched for the price in a saltwater spinning reel."

Durable,

"My Dad has had this reel for almost 30 years now. It is extremely durable and has worked well despite the minimal maintenance he puts into it. Only recently has the wire in the bail trip broke but still works if you manually set the bail. A great reel for all freshwater applications."

Bulletproof,
February 28, 2007
"Besides the horrible playback and lack of even line lay, a BG will bring a large fish in. No problem! I have a BG60 mated to a 10ft Daiwa Sealine rod. My cheapest combo I have in my arsenal. This combo caught a "slammer" bluefish last season and the drag perform very nicely. The reel is built like a tank and I don't worry about this reel hitting rocks or pavement. A BG will just smile in your face and ask for more punishment. :)"

Rock Solid,
February 13, 2007
"Rock solid and still silky smooth ...
I have a couple BG-60s I use for Tarpon. When a 150 lb Tarpon runs 100 yds, you the last thing you want to worry about is your drag failing. I have seen drag surge on some competitors reels during these runs - not a pretty sight. None of that on the BG-60 due to the low start-up inertia and large washers. Yes, it's not the prettiest reel on the market and the anti-reverse is not infinite which means there is some handle playback. But when I am fighting a Tarpon, I don't care how pretty it is, I just want it to perform. The BG's have just done that -- time and time again. I walk the docks whenever I am in the Florida Keys to see which reels the guides are using on their boats. If you do the same you see lot's of BG reels, because they are inexpensive and they are rugged. If you want looks, buy another reel. If you want a great value and workhorse that won't quit on you, buy a BG."

Don't mess with a classic,

"I bought this reel after a trip to the key's while fishing in Flamingo and had no problem witht he older styled Bg's. Most of the capatains have the older model, but I bought one of the newer models and I can't speak very boldly on this matter. Within 30 days My bail screw broke after I tried to slightly tighten it( which shows the quality of the parts. I have never used a reel that had so much playback like this one. It feels very wobbly and cheaply made. I love the series great reel, but am goign to change to the Spinfisher graphites from Penn which I eblive will produce better results."

Solid Performer,

"The Black Gold series from Daiwa offers dependability and a bail that snaps shut cast after cast. I've used this reel in saltwater for striped bass for years. The drag is always smooth and never punchy when large fish make bug runs. I just wish there was less playback in the handle."

Rick the bassin fanatic,

"After having had several other spinning reels fail due to slipping gears on the hookset, I decided to buy the "tried and true" Daiwa Black Gold. I was attracted to the metal construction and the fact that it has been in Daiwa's line for so long! I fish for bass in heavy cover and demand power and reliability in my reels. This is a very smooth, solid reel which I expect will outlast many others."
