A Bang For Your Buck Reel

,
March 2, 2012
By ChazHelper
from Florida
Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design, Performs well, Value for money, Quality
"I just recently found one of these laying around in my house, I took it apart and began cleaning it. It is made very simply, it is a "lifer', a reel that really could last a life time.
I have more expensive reels that may reel a bit smoother, but at the end of the day, this reel is incredibly easy to disassemble, clean and re assemble, which goes a long way.
There really isn't any downsides to this reel, it's affordable, and works well, what more is there to say. Its the perfect reel for someone on a budget, and who wants something built to last."

will get the job done

Advantages: Performs well, Value for money
Disadvantages: Difficult to use, Performance, lacking smoothness
"This real is definitly not the smoothest reel on the market. However, it is a quality saltwater reel that will get the job done well. The drag is sufficient to take on anything you want to catch. Overall this is a great buy for the money but I wish it was a little smoother."

"i wouldn't depend on this reel for bigger fish, but the smaller ones are worth their money and perform amazingly. i used the bg15 to catch me countless big triggerfish and even a 50lb tarpon"

Black & Gild or bust!

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Value for money, Quality
"I just purchased this reel and it has already proven to be one of if not the best reel in my arsenal. This past weekend I went fishing in Islamorada, FL and apart from instantly gaining the respect of every boat captain who saw me carry my new BG 90 aboard, I easily laned 2 40lb+ Amberjacks from 250ft down and 2 20lb+ grouper from 90 ft down.
The retrieve was smoother than my buddy's Saltist +a far more expensive reel. Thanks to captain kenny of the Carib Sea for recommending this reel.

Best Purchase Ever

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Value for money, Quality
"I live in Serbia (Voivodina, Novi Sad) and my favorite spinning reel the Daiwa BG. I've bought three Daiwa BG 20, two years ago. The reel I purchased through my friend Paul from Florida at Bass Pro Shops and I mainly use them for fishing catfish, carp, pike and walleye. Reels are fantastic, strong, durable and reliable. I'd recommend it for the hard-depth fishing."

Poor quality

,
November 18, 2010
By captbly
from Jacksonville, FL
Disadvantages: Durability
"I bought this reel about six months ago. I used it about a dozen times until now and always rinsed it with freshwater after use. The other night while I was fishing it stopped working (could only get about 2-4lbs of drag at the tightest setting) Took the reel apart, cleaned and still could not get the drag to work properly. I bought this reel as a knock around, but for the price a cheaper reel would be just as dependable. Would not buy this product again. One positive, it did cast well on my 7" MH Hurricane rod."

"Used the reel for the first time this weekend. Seemed to cast smoothly and reel quietly and well. Dont know how well the drag worked as I didn't catch anything that really tested it. The drag was smooth for what I caught"

Very Dependable

,
June 13, 2010
By Edwyo
Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Value for money, Quality, indestructible
"These are heavy, clunky, low-tech reels. You might even call them old-fashioned, but they are very dependable and virtually indestructible. I now own 5 of them in sizes from BG15 to BG60, and I have never had a problem. If you have not tried one, be aware that this design does not incorporate a one-way bearing; so the rotor can turn 10-20 degrees before the anti-reverse engages. This is a minor annoyance, but it has never cost me a fish."

Solid, Old School Design

,
April 2, 2010
By CaptEdR
from Central NJ
Advantages: Ease of use, Style/Design, Performs well, Value for money, Quality
Disadvantages: heavy by today's standards
"I've owned Daiwa spinning reels since 1974. My first, was a Silver Series (SS) 4000, the predecessor to the GS and then the BG series reels. I used that reel in salt water for many years, eventually giving to my friend's son. I recently visited that same friend, and was blown away to see that same reel hanging from a rod in his 4x4's rod rack....it was 35 years old, and was still fishing!
That alone, should give one some idea as to how durable these reels are.
The BG series uses essentially the same design as the aforementioned silver series reel, but has been improved in a number of areas, such as the number of ball-bearings (3), the anodized finish, retrieve ratio, anodized finish, and having an internal bail trip (whereas the old SS series used an external "bail knocker").
Yes, they are heavy. Yes, the do not feature an infinite anti-reverse. But, big deal. You'll still be using this reel 30 years later, when all its competitors have been relegated to the trash heap.
My advice?
1) Buy'em while you still can...I'm considering picking up one of each!
2) Don't forget to keep spare bail-springs on hand for them, as they'll wear out once or twice during the reel's lifetime."

Disadvantages: after about 30 years the bail flip wears out
"i have a bg 13 that is over 30 years old, and is still the best reel that i own, was bought by my mom in mid 70's going strong ever since, have caught 10 pound channels, and too many bluegill and bass to count, if i could afford them i would by one of each size."

One and only

By Alevi

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Value for money, infallible workhorse
Disadvantages: see ps below
"I am an inveterate saltwater fisherman and my reel stable consists of BG13s exclusively (5 in all). If properly taken care of this reel lasts forever; my oldest is 22 years old and still performs.
Although small in size, it has beaten 12lb blues and 10lb leer-fish and amberjacks. Highly recommended, best value for money. Hope that Daiwa keeps producing them for a long time to come.
PS. Reel release button may generate knots in frontal winds. Just glance before casting."

hated it!!

,
May 16, 2009
By Belizewayne
from Belize
Disadvantages: Durability, Performance
"Bought a BG-15 mostly on these reviews. Worked a couple of times, then had to send it back. When I got it back the little button on the drag faced popped out, and when I spooled it with braided line, the line would wrap around the little button on the drag face, if I didn't check it every time. What a mess if I didn't notice it or had to retrieve in a hurry. Would never buy another one. I'm going back to Penn."

"This reel is the best reel i have used. I have a bg30 with 30lb. suffix and i recently used it for some skoolies and had no problem bringing them in. Ive brought in a barracuda that was about 50lbs. I have it sitting on a 30-80lb. ugly stic, and for me this is the best combo I've used. i recommended it to a few friends and now they are all using bg30s. I've used this reel for everything. Ive been using this reel on my downrigger and it has amazing. i recommend this to everyone."

Great reels

,

"I've got a BG15, BG30, and BG90. I've had great results with all of them. I even caught my largest kingfish to date (35 lbs) on the BG15 and it worked great. The gear ratio of the BG15 is also perfect for topwater in my opinion. The BG30 is perfectly matched up for spoon fishing, as well as jigging. I regularly catch Grouper and Snapper on the BG30 and BG90 and the gear ratio and durability in all of them can't be matched for the price in a saltwater spinning reel."

Awesome!!

"Bought this reel because my father had one 15years ago and love it.
Got it and have been using it since my favorite reel and the only one I take out and can be 100% positive it's going to get the job done. I've had a 4ft gator get caught on my hook in a lake (using bacon and I didn't see him) and he came right out of the water no problem. I didn't mean to catch him but I wanted to make sure the hook was out of his mouth so it didn't hurt him and at first when he was under the water I didn't even know what he was, but he put the diawa BG90 to the test.
Just about anything you fish for it can handle. Good craftsmanship.
I'm getting my boyfriend one for Christmas because he always want s to use mine.
Good luck fishing:)
