Plastic poppers

,
August 29, 2011
By Wayeno
from S F Bay Area
Advantages: Style/Design, Performs well, Value for money
"Of all the plastic poppers I have tried these are the best. Cast well, good action, and catch stripers when other plugs won't. They may not be a good choice for big fish because they are not through wired. I have a buddy that uses them all the time and he has never had one detroyed by a big fish."

"I use these in red & white, mainstay in the summer when squid are around and black/silver in the fall when bunker are around. These cast well, most float if line breaks so they can be retrieved, and are very durable. They also troll well. And of cousre, catch Blues and Bass very well"

Best top water musky lure!!

Advantages: Performs well, Value for money, Quality
"I took a fishing trip to Canada this summer and bought a few of these lures. I was a little shaky about buying them because they are so inexpensive but they work great!!! I never knew how to do the walk the dog technique but learned very fast with this lure and it became so easy!! Caught a few huge muskies with them!! The only downside is that it gets tiring after an hour but once you see a 40" musky clear the water completey going after your lure, you will not care one bit!!!"

pencil poppers are hard to beat

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well
Disadvantages: none
"Easily my favorite striper topwater lure when waves are crashing the shoreline as I expect at daybreak with the windy forecast. I just finished loading up my boat for tomorrow’s trip. 3 pencil poppers and 1 large chug bug already tied on and ready to go.
My favorite is the red/white with the blue/chrome coming in second. I always add some feathers to my rear hook and when they get dull, I replace them with Mustad triple grip hooks also with either red or white feathers.

Poor Finish

Disadvantages: Durability
"I used this pencil popper once in salt water and about 1/3 of the silver finish came off the middle section and it was not caused by a fish strike, just poor quality. Unfortunately I bought three of them."

Predators beware!

,
December 28, 2008
By Fresh
from Singapore
"Singapore:Got this lure, used it, did not land it - the painful lesson learned is to make sure that your terminal tackle, line joints are secured. I lost a "probable" 7 pounder, fought for about 15 secs and the line gave way :( It was early morning, still dark and the line pull was fantastic. The fish leaped infront of me, showed its white belly, waved goodbye and took away my cordell in its mouth. I make sure I get a few more of both lures and fishes!!!"

Big bait

,
June 21, 2008
By GetTheNet

"This bait will catch largemouth bass. I was fishing with a friend of mine when he pulled this out of the tackle box. I laughed at him because of the size of this bait. Within an hour he had caught three largemouth all over four pounds. The best time to fish this thing is when the water is a bit choppy. The fish are going to notice it because it is loud and large. You can walk the dog easily with it. The only thing I have against it is that it is very heavy. It will cast a country mile, but after fishing it for ten minutes you will be tired, especially your arms and wrists. But as I said, it catches big fish. What do they say "Big bait, Big fish?""

one of the very best

"if you happen to fish in waters that have stripers, wipers, hybrids and black bass, make that large black bass and you don't toss pencil poppers, you are missing out on some of the best top water action available. these pencil poppers have been around for a long time. they were mostly used for saltwater fish in the surf. when cotton cordell started making these lures in the 1oz. 6" size he opened-up a whole new world for we top water addicts. there are a few walkers on the market that catch all of the above mentioned species, but none better than the pencil poppers.i don't know why, they simply catch fish, BIG FISH. you have to try some and the color doesn't seem to matter, altho i like the rainbow and the silver/ blue, silver / black and a redhead will do------"

Striped Bass Slayer

,

"I recently spent two days on a large southern lake fishing for Striper. We tied on the Blue and Silver Pencil Poppers and on the very first cast my buddy had his smashed by a nice 16 pound fish. It seemed that our boat was the only one dragging them in. When we got a break in the action I noticed that the other boats around us were not using Pencil Poppers. Later in the morning we Found Stripers busting on the surface and the pencil poppers did the job again. Again we were sorrounded by other boats that did not seem to be catching anywhere near the numbers of fish that we were catching. This is a Fantastic product and I will not be caught without a few in my box."

"I've been using the Cotton Cordell Pencil Poppers for about 5 years now on Northern Minnesota lakes. It consistantly produces some of the most exhilarating surface hits from large-mouth bass and northern pike I've ever seen from a surface bait! The bait is easy to use. Just cast it, let it sit a second to settle, and from there it's up to you. Twitch it, pop it, walk-the-dog, just reel it; the fish can't resist it! Have you ever seen a pike fly? With this lure, I have! They'll get completely out of the water with the force of their hits. Large-mouth bass barely larger than the 6" Pencil Popper have taken the lure without hesitation. And once, while fishing skinny water, I managed to boat a 28" diameter snapping turtle! The Cotton Cordell Pencil Popper is the one bait I regularly stock in my go-to box for fishing fun and excitement!"
