Bass Pro Shops® Rick Clunn Signature Series Low-Profile Baitcast Reels

''This reel fishes the way I do—comfortably, confidently, and consistently. Im especially fond of the way the new braking system casts baits of all shapes and sizes without resulting in backlashes.'' Rick Clunn, 4-Time Bassmaster Classic® Champion That’s right, the only 4-time Bassmaster Classic® champ, and the man voted ''World’s Greatest Angler'' by the fans has found a way to improve on his rock-solid Signature Series baitcaster. The first thing you’ll undoubtably notice is the color—it’s a blue Soft Touch finish that gives you a great grip, even in the wettest conditions. The low-profile design you’ve come to love has been enhanced even further thanks to the lightweight Recurve Handle and drag star. And inside, we’ve overhauled the braking system, outfitting it with the state-of-the-art Dual Braking System™ for the ultimate in virtually backlash-free casting. Also features click-adjustable drag system that delivers up to a full 10 lbs. of drag pressure, 1-piece anodized aluminum frame, machined-aluminum spool, 8-bearing system, and Powerlock™ instant anti-reverse.Line recovery in inches per handle turn.

Great real for half the price, November 19, 2009
By Mozo from Minnesota bass fishing

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money

"I've used Rick Clunn Signature reals for 10 years now. Bass fishing slow and light, fast on top, or heavy in the slop it doesn't matter. They're tough, smooth and do the job consistently. You'll pay twice as much for a comparable reel. Rick Clunn claims he uses these reels exclusively."

Good deal on a reel, November 3, 2009
By ShowMeJoe from Northeast Missouri

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Value for money

"I bought this reel and used it the next day. It was very smooth. Even though it was very windy out, I never had a backlash. The dual brake system really works. I even caught a very nice bass that day. Given the insanely high prices of some reels these days, this one is a bargain. It performs better than a reel I bought a few years ago that cost $50 more. The only question remaining is how long it will last, as the cheaper reels I've had tend to wear out and break in a couple of years."

Just love 'em, November 1, 2009
By PhantomII from Tampa, FL

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money

"I bought 4 of these when I upgraded my baitcasters last year. I was looking for reels that would let me concentrate on fishing and not worry about birds nests. These reels are fantastic I have never had a birds nest using them. The feel very comfortable and the handles have a nice feel to them. The dual brake feature is my favorite part. I run 4 centrifical brakes and set the magnets to 7. They cast very long, the drag is top notch and the reels are smooth right from the box. I have been using mine for over a year now and have not had any problems, I love these reels and hope they don't discontinue them before I can get some more."

Fantastic, October 5, 2009
By Zags from Spokane, WA

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money

"I just received my reel in the mail yesterday. Spooled it with Sufix braid and hit the water today. This reel is super smooth, smoother than my Shimano Citica. It does not cast as far as the Citica, but the dual braking system allows me such greater control. I was throwing weightless Yum Dingers and had no nests. This reel looks sharp. The recurve handle is a nice touch. Only caught a couple squawfish, but the drag works great. For 80 bucks I feel like I won the lottery. If you are looking for quality rods and reels that won't cost you a fortune, look no further than BPS products. On a side note I was a bit indecisive between this reel and the Pro Qualifier. I chose this reel because I like the push button release rather than the pin release."

Excellent, July 9, 2009
By Jumper327 from Killeen, Texas

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money, texture of the reel itself

"This is the first review I have ever written in regards to a product I've bought. So that in itself should tell you something. I've tried to include the relevant information you need to make an informed decision.

I've used many baitcast reels in my time from entry level to top of the line for both pleasure and tournament fishing. I have to say this one performs the best. I purchased the 6.4.1 ( Item number: 38-354-076-00). It simply isn't a good reel for the money. It is simply an excellent reel. They could have asked over $200.00 for this reel. If I had tried it before knowing the price I wouldn't have hesitated in spending that amount. As it is for only $109.00 I cannot find one single thing to complain about. This reel is top notch and still performs above my expectations. It can cast as far as you need it to accurately (and I cast far with crank and swimbaits) along with the sensitivity and smoothness in the reel itself truly makes this an excellent buy.
I've tried this reel on several rods I have from inexpensive ($20.00) to top of the line ($500+) and it really didn't make any difference in performance. I actually settled on my Castaway 6'8 Medium Action rod ($69.00) as my perferred set up until I can get me a couple more of these reels. Since I've essentially set aside my other reels It's the best all around combo that I have at the moment.

As for the types of line I've used it with I've paired it with mono (Trilene XL 10lbs), fluro (Trilene Professional Grade 14lbs), and braid (BPS Premium Excel .016" DIA .40mm
12 LB MONO EQUIVALENT) ranging between 10-14 lbs (respectively) and it performed well with each.

I use it with all kinds of lures from worms, jigs, crankbaits, topwater, spinners, and swimbaits. The 6.4.1 set up allows me the flexibility to fish either fast or slow. The only problem I have right now is deciding if I even want to get the 7.1.1 or 5.4.1 for specific set ups or if I just want another 6.4.1. It's simply a great reel. Try it. You will love it.
"

This is the one you are looking for, June 16, 2009
By MackAttack from Eastern NC

Advantages: Ease of use

"I have had this reel for almost 3 years. Absolutly the best reel I have in the boat. With some luck I will get another one on fathers day. This reel does it all; flipping, cranking, finnese, you name it! I have more expensive reels that have not held up as good as this one."

"This is the best reel for the money you can possibly buy! I also have the Johnny Morris Sig Series. The RC is Ide say just as good. The JM just feels a bit better. If you want a reel that will perform like a pro at a fraction of the price, go for the Rick Clunn! You will never regret it for a second."

Great value, May 13, 2009
By Billz from South Florida

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Value for money

"Dollar for dollar, this is the best reel I own. I have 2 in fact. I have more expensive reels with more bearings, but none are as easy to use as this Klun signature series. Both of mine are 7.1:1 ratio reels, and they cast like a dream, wind or no wind. I typically use them for smaller, weightless baits. But occasionally, I'll use them for spinnerbaits too."

Right on the Money, May 3, 2009
By NorthernAngler from Central Michigan

Advantages: Ease of use, Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money

"I have had this reel about two weeks now and took it out yesterday river fishing. I have it spooled with 17 lb Stren original mono as a backer, and filled the spool with Spiderwire Invisilign Braid in 20lbs and a Spiderwire flouro 15lb leader. In heavy wind I had no problems throwing my Strike King series three shad into the wind as well has my medium weight husky jerks. The finish on this reel is unique and does make for a comfortable grip. Put on a 7' MH Bionic Blade I can't complain. The reel is also extremely sensitive and I was worried that the feel of my bait hitting the bottom was actually bearings being bad at first because it is that sensitive. Compared to my Quantum Energy PT I have a hard choice choosing which one even though one is twice the price!"

New model is amazing, April 23, 2009
By ManiacFishermanNGU from Springfield, MO

Advantages: Performs well, Quality, Style/Design, Value for money
Disadvantages: all features not easily accessable

"The new Rick Clunn reel is awesome. Anyone who talks about using this reel for years hasn't. I owned last years model and this new model is in a totally different league with several improvements since the last model. the reel has a textured coating, when I first bought it I thought nothing about it but I used it in hard rain and it actually made a world of difference. The texture kept the reel right where it needed to be in my hand. It made the reel so much easier to use. The duel Breaking system is phenominal! No bird's nest at all. The casting and retrieving are super smooth. I have owned reels from just about every company to find what works best for me and this reel beats most of the more expencive reels like the revo-sx hands down. I actaully bought the new qualifier at the same time and the qualifier was awesome but I had to return it to get another Rick Clunn. I Love this reel BPS really hit a homerun with this one! The only thing I could ask for to improve this reel would be to make both sets of breaks externally adjustable."

50/50, March 31, 2009
By Omega47 from New Hampshire

"Bought 2 of these. One is smooth as silk and works flawlessly. The second was never very smooth. Took it apart and some of the magnets chrome plating had flaked off and the magnets were very rusty. The gearbox isn't smooth either, like there is something in there as well. Need to send it back for repair. Expect this with a sub-$50 reel, but not in this price range."
